Uruguayan Football Mourns Mario Bruno Bentancor, 22

Uruguayan football has been shaken by the death of Mario Bruno Bentancor, a former Peñarol youth prospect who has died at just 22 years of age.

His body was found having suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest, days after a turbulent trip to Argentina for a trial that he had hoped would relaunch his professional career.

Bentancor had recently travelled to Buenos Aires for an audition with first-division side Deportivo Riestra, according to French outlet RMC. It was meant to be a crucial step, a chance to turn early promise into a contract in one of South America’s most demanding leagues. Riestra chose not to sign him.

The trial ended in controversy. Reports state that the striker left accusing several fellow trialists of stealing his clothes. With no agreement reached and tensions high, he returned to Uruguay, his future once again uncertain.

For those who had watched him grow, that future had once looked very different.

Bentancor came through the academy at Peñarol, a club that measures its youngsters against a long line of stars. Within that environment, he was regarded as one of the brightest talents of his age group, a forward with the potential to make the step into the professional ranks.

When that path stalled, he moved on to Deportivo Italiano, competing in one of Uruguay’s amateur championships, still chasing the dream that had driven him from the start.

It is Deportivo Italiano who have now been left to put into words what his loss means. The club confirmed his death and paid tribute with a message that captured the depth of feeling around him: "You will remain alive in every goal celebration, in every embrace, and in the hearts of everyone at this club.. your club Deportivo Italiano. Rest in peace".

For a young striker who once carried the hopes of a giant like Peñarol and the affection of a modest club like Deportivo Italiano, the final whistle has come far too soon.
