Unai Emery Denies Any Friendly Ties with Chelsea Despite Active Summer Transfers

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has firmly dismissed the idea that his club shares a friendly relationship with Chelsea, even though there was significant transfer activity between the two sides this summer. Emery emphasized the ruthless competition in the Premier League, stating that both clubs are rivals determined to outperform each other on every level.

Transfer Frenzy Between Aston Villa and Chelsea

The two clubs have been involved in numerous transfers over recent seasons, continuing into the latest window. Emiliano Martinez moved to Stamford Bridge in a £7.5 million deal following the eye-catching £117 million transfer of Morgan Rogers. In return, Villa signed Nicolas Jackson for a club-record fee that could reach £65 million, while Alejandro Garnacho joined on loan with an option to buy.

Emery Makes His Position Clear

Despite the regular exchanges of players and constant communication between the clubs, Emery stressed that their dealings are purely transactional and not based on any goodwill.

"Good relations? The relationship is only through the deals – for money, for other players," Emery said. "They want to kill us. And we want to kill them… it is not a good relationship. Of course, because we have good players and we can as well sign players from them, but it’s not a good relationship, it’s a deal for money and a deal for players."

He also pointed out Chelsea’s strategic hires like set-piece coach Austin MacPhee were aimed at weakening Villa's squad. "They are signing Morgan, they are signing Emiliano Martinez to kill us," Emery added. While he expressed happiness for the players moving on, his feelings about Chelsea were far less positive.

Aston Villa Faces Major Squad Changes

With key departures including Emiliano Martinez and star striker Ollie Watkins, who left for Al-Hilal, Villa has lost six regular starters from the team that won the Europa League final in May. Emery admitted rebuilding will be a challenge as he integrates new signings such as Leon Goretzka and Zion Suzuki.

"I know we must rebuild the team," Emery said. "We will need time. But we must compete on Monday. We needed to compete last Sunday in Brighton but we didn’t compete. We are working every day as fast as possible to be ready, everybody."

Upcoming Test Against Arsenal

Villa faces a tough test at home against reigning champions Arsenal on Monday, after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat at Brighton. Emery may give debuts to new arrivals Jackson, Goretzka, and Suzuki as he rushes to stabilize the squad.

"Arsenal are the favourites," Emery praised. "Looking at the team with [Mikel] Arteta there seven years in a row, they are getting better and better and are investing more and more. They are growing bigger as a club with the players they can sign. Arteta is doing a fantastic job. Arsenal are the favourites to win the Premier League and to win the Champions League. I like watching them a lot."
