Tottenham Targets £100m Sandro Tonali as De Zerbi Seeks Statement Signing
Tottenham’s summer has already been loud. Roberto De Zerbi now wants it to be seismic.
Spurs have registered their interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with the Italian quickly emerging as the marquee name at the top of De Zerbi’s wishlist. An approach has been made to the player’s camp and, crucially, the early noises have been positive.
The problem is the price. Newcastle are understood to want around £100 million to even consider a sale.
De Zerbi’s big swing
Tottenham have moved quickly in this window. Andy Robertson and Marco Senesi have arrived on free transfers, while a £52m deal for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke is close to completion. Those deals strengthen the squad. Tonali would redefine it.
De Zerbi is said to view the 24-year-old as the “statement signing” that underlines where he wants to take Spurs – a technical, aggressive midfielder capable of dictating tempo and driving a team through the lines. It is exactly the sort of profile his football leans on.
The first contact has come on the player side only. No formal talks have yet taken place with Newcastle, but the door is not bolted shut.
Newcastle’s stance: big profit or no deal
Eddie Howe’s side paid £61m for Tonali in 2023 and, despite the turbulence of his gambling suspension, he has grown into a central figure since returning. Newcastle accept that a major sale may be needed this summer, but they want a significant profit on their original outlay.
Hence the £100m valuation. Pay that, or look elsewhere.
Tonali’s contract strengthens Newcastle’s hand. He signed fresh terms in January, tying him to the club until 2029, with an option for a further year. Any buyer is not just paying for talent, but for control over his prime years.
That long deal also explains why this would be a test of Tottenham’s resolve and budget. Spurs are not alone in admiring him, either. Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City have all been linked with the Italian in recent windows, and any hint of availability will not go unnoticed.
A key figure at St James’ Park
Since his comeback from suspension for breaching gambling rules, Tonali has re-established himself as one of Newcastle’s most influential players. Last season he scored three goals and delivered seven assists in 53 appearances across all competitions, numbers that only tell part of the story of his importance in build-up and transition.
Howe has been consistent publicly. Back in February, he was clear about where he felt his midfielder stood.
“Sandro’s very happy here,” Howe said then. “He’s got a great relationship with me and his teammates and he seems really, really happy within himself. I don’t see an issue, but I’m not in control of everything.
“But Sandro is absolutely fine. I had discussions with him yesterday. His focus is on the here and now with us.
“There’s no issue with Sandro. He’s happy and committed. But our best players will always be attracting glances from other clubs – that’s just the reality of football.”
Those words still ring true. Yet the market has its own logic, and Newcastle’s financial calculations this summer could change the picture quickly if a huge bid lands on the table.
Spurs’ next move
For Tottenham, the question is simple and brutal: how far are they willing to go for De Zerbi’s man?
They have already signalled ambition with early business, but Tonali would drag them into a different financial bracket. A nine-figure fee, top-end wages, and a battle with other elite clubs if the chase becomes public.
De Zerbi wants a statement. Newcastle want a fortune. Tonali, under contract until 2029, sits at the centre of it all.
If Spurs decide to push, this could become the defining transfer saga of their summer.
