Tottenham Closing in on Sandro Tonali Signing

Tottenham are moving fast. Barely days after scraping over the Premier League survival line, the club are now closing in on one of the most ambitious midfield signings in their modern history.

According to multiple reports in Italy and England, Spurs have reached a “total agreement” with Sandro Tonali on a six-year contract worth around £72m in total, a deal that would run until 2032 and more than double the Italy international’s current salary at Newcastle United. The London club now believe they can find a compromise with Newcastle, who are understood to be holding out for a £100m fee.

From survival scrap to statement window

Tottenham finished their season with a tense 1-0 win over Everton, a result that kept them in the Premier League and condemned West Ham to relegation by a margin of just two points. It was a narrow escape that has clearly sharpened minds in north London.

The response has been immediate. Four new faces are already through the door: Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson have arrived on free transfers from Burnley, Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively, while Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke has joined in a £52m deal. It is a rebuild with a clear theme: experience, reliability, and players used to the intensity of English football.

Now Spurs want a conductor for that new-look side. Tonali is at the top of that list.

Tonali wants Spurs

TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported on Friday that Tonali has informed Newcastle he wants the move to Tottenham this summer. The 24-year-old has indicated he is ready to accept Spurs’ proposal, a crucial step that has shifted the balance of the negotiation.

Newcastle, though, are not in the mood to sell cheaply. The club are still asking for £100m for the midfielder, a figure that reflects both his age and his perceived importance to their project. Tottenham’s confidence stems from the player’s stance and the length and value of the contract already understood to be agreed in principle.

Momentum building around the deal

The noise around this transfer has been growing steadily. Fabrizio Romano has repeatedly underlined that Tottenham are the leading – and effectively the only – serious contender for Tonali at this stage.

On his YouTube channel, Romano doubled down on his original line, insisting it remains “Tottenham full stop” in the race and that Spurs are actively working on the deal. Crucially, he has not attached the names of Manchester City or any other heavyweight suitor to Tonali since first linking the Italian with Spurs last week, a sign of how clearly the path appears to be opening for the London club.

Italian journalist Nicolo Schira added further fuel to the story earlier in the week, revealing that Tottenham were preparing a fresh bid and that Tonali had already given his “availability” to sign a contract with Spurs through to 2032. Schira also noted that two other Premier League clubs are monitoring the situation, but made it clear that Tottenham are the ones pushing hardest.

Now, Schira reports that Spurs and Tonali have reached a total agreement over personal terms, with that £72m package on the table and the club “confident” of striking a deal with Newcastle.

A different Tottenham taking shape

This is not the behaviour of a club content simply to avoid another relegation scare. With Dubravka, Senesi, Robertson and van Hecke already secured, Tottenham are building a spine. Tonali, if Newcastle finally relent, would be the centrepiece: a high-end midfielder around whom the rest of the side can be constructed.

The pressure is now on the two clubs to find common ground on the fee. Newcastle’s valuation remains steep. Tottenham’s belief that Tonali wants the move gives them leverage, but not a free run.

If Spurs get this over the line, it will not just be another signing. It will be a declaration that last season’s brush with disaster was a turning point, not a warning ignored.
