If those two deals go through, Iraola suddenly has far more variety and depth across the forward line. In that scenario, cashing in on Gakpo for a significant fee becomes a strategic decision rather than a reckless gamble.

What Liverpool cannot afford is to lose Gakpo without proper replacements in place. That would be nonsensical given the current fragility of the attack. Any sale hinges on the club being sure they have enough quality coming in first.

His future is now “very much accelerating”, with reports in France suggesting a move could be completed within days. With other suitors falling away, Liverpool are effectively standing alone in the race.

If Barcola signs, and if Liverpool can also land Mbaye, the entire shape of the forward line changes. Gakpo’s potential departure stops looking like a risk and starts to resemble a calculated reshaping of the attack.
