Strasbourg Names Hugo Oliveira as Head Coach Following Gary O'Neil's Exit
Strasbourg introduced Portuguese coach Hugo Oliveira as their new manager on Sunday, replacing Englishman Gary O'Neil, who left unexpectedly last month.
O'Neil departed the Ligue 1 club on June 26 to join Ipswich Town, having only started his role in January. The club has not revealed how long Oliveira's contract will last. Oliveira, aged 47, joins from Portuguese top-tier side Famalicao, where he held his first head coaching position.
"It's an honour to be here in Strasbourg and to join such a great project," Oliveira stated in a club announcement. "I want to bring emotion, create memories and give the best of myself to help the club to develop."
Most of Oliveira’s career has been spent as a goalkeeping coach, working with teams like the Portugal national team, Everton, and Fulham. He collaborated closely with Marco Silva at those English clubs. In December 2024, he became Famalicao's head coach, leading them to a fifth-place finish in the Primeira Liga last season—their highest since returning to the top division six years ago.
During his time with Strasbourg, O'Neil led the team to the Conference League semi-finals and secured eighth place in Ligue 1. Strasbourg will begin their new Ligue 1 campaign away against Marseille over the weekend of August 21-23.
