Simone Inzaghi Makes Key Selection Decisions for Al-Hilal vs Al-Ahli

Simone Inzaghi has made his first big selection call of the Saudi Roshn League season, cutting three players from Al-Hilal’s squad for today’s clash with Al-Ahli at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.

The Italian coach has left out Turkey’s Yusuf Akcicek, France’s Simon Bouabre and midfielder Abdullah Al-Anazi, each for sharply different reasons.

Akcicek is sidelined by a minor knee bruise, a knock serious enough to keep him out but not to cause wider alarm inside the club. Bouabre, by contrast, pays the price for a lack of full match fitness, with Inzaghi unwilling to risk a player he does not yet see at peak condition.

Al-Anazi’s omission is the most brutal of the three. He has simply fallen out of the technical staff’s plans for this game, a clear signal of the rising competition for places in a squad built to chase every trophy on offer.

One name does survive the cut. English striker Wally Watkins is included in the group, though his actual involvement remains on a knife-edge. Inzaghi will make the final call after the pre-match technical meeting, once he has weighed his options and settled on the balance of his attack.

Al-Hilal arrive in the third round sitting second in the Roshn League table with 9 points from 3 matches, three behind leaders Al-Nassr. The gap, though, comes with an asterisk: “the Boss” still have a game in hand, and know that a win over Al-Ahli keeps the pressure firmly on the champions.

Al-Ahli start the day in seventh on 6 points from 3 games, but the table remains tight. A positive result against Al-Hilal would not just lift them up the standings; it would test whether they can genuinely disturb the emerging order at the top of the Saudi game this season.
