Scott McTominay Out for Month Due to Heart Surgery

Scott McTominay will be out for a month after Napoli confirmed the midfielder needs minor heart surgery to correct an irregular heartbeat.

The Serie A champions announced on Tuesday that the 29-year-old has developed a "mild, benign arrhythmia", a condition that causes an irregular heart rhythm but, crucially, is not considered serious.

Napoli said McTominay will undergo corrective ablation surgery (PFA) in the coming days and expect him to be back in contention after the international break. The club framed the procedure as precautionary and targeted, aimed at resolving the issue before it can affect his season.

The timing, though, hits Scotland hard. McTominay is set to miss all four of their Nations League group fixtures between September 26 and October 6 — two meetings with Slovenia and one each against Switzerland and North Macedonia.

For Napoli, it is a short-term absence. For Scotland, it is a month without one of their most experienced and combative midfielders at the very start of a new campaign.
