Sergiño Dest swerves Xavi question – and points straight to Frenkie de Jong instead

Xavi Hernandez taking over as Netherlands head coach has sent a jolt through European football. Opinion pieces, interviews, hot takes – the reaction has been constant.

Sergiño Dest, though, wants no part in a deep dive.

The PSV full-back, who shared a dressing room with Xavi at Barcelona, was asked by ESPN for his view on the appointment. On paper, he looked like the perfect man to offer insight into what the former Barça boss could bring to the Oranje.

In reality, he passed the ball elsewhere.

No tactical breakdown. No big endorsement. Just a gentle deflection towards the Barcelona midfielder, who worked far more closely with Xavi during his time at Camp Nou.

The interviewer tried to push a little harder, asking Dest about his memories of playing alongside Xavi at Barcelona. Again, there was no attempt to dress things up.

“It’s been quite a while since then. To be honest, I don’t have many memories of that time.”

For someone who lived through a turbulent but important phase at Barça, the comments were strikingly reserved. Dest was part of a squad reshaped under huge pressure, yet he offered almost nothing on Xavi’s influence, preferring to let De Jong carry that conversation.

Given their respective roles in Catalonia, it makes sense. Frenkie de Jong became one of Xavi’s key lieutenants in midfield, central to how Barcelona tried to control games. Dest, by contrast, never truly nailed down a place.

From Camp Nou frustration to PSV revival

Dest’s career has taken a winding route to this point. He arrived at Barcelona as one of Europe’s most exciting young full-backs, a modern, attacking defender expected to grow into a long-term solution on the flank.

It never quite clicked.

He struggled to secure a regular starting spot, his form fluctuated, and a loan move to AC Milan failed to ignite his development. The promise was still there, but the platform wasn’t.

PSV changed that.

In Eindhoven, Dest rediscovered his rhythm. He attacked with confidence, defended with greater assurance and quickly became a vital part of the side. His performances re-established his reputation and reminded people why he had been so highly rated in the first place.

A serious injury then cut that momentum brutally short, halting his rise just as he looked fully settled.

He has fought his way back again. Since returning, Dest has resumed his role as a key figure for PSV, his form once more drawing attention from clubs watching the transfer market.

So when the questions came about Xavi and the national team, Dest chose the simple route: keep the focus off the past, keep his answers tight, and send the spotlight towards Frenkie de Jong – the player who truly lived Xavi’s Barcelona from the inside.
