Liverpool Secures Rio Ngumoha Contract Amid Gakpo's Spurs Interest

Liverpool are closing in on what they see as one of the most important pieces of business of their summer – tying Rio Ngumoha to a new, improved contract.

The club now “fully expect” to reach an agreement with the winger, according to TEAMtalk, and there is a growing sense inside Anfield that the threat of losing one of their brightest young talents has eased.

Ngumoha, still a teenager, emerged as a rare spark in a season that fell well short of Liverpool’s standards. While the team laboured, he played without fear, driving at defenders and demanding the ball when others hid. Many around the club felt he had done enough to start more often, especially with Cody Gakpo struggling to impose himself.

That form inevitably attracted attention. Bayern Munich tested Liverpool’s resolve earlier in the summer, with the youngster linked to a surprise move to the Bundesliga giants. Liverpool, though, never blinked.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano underlined that stance this week, describing Ngumoha as “untouchable” at Anfield and stressing that he was never close to joining Bayern. Inside the club, he is viewed as a crucial pillar of both the present and the long-term project.

Liverpool’s recruitment plan underlines that belief. They are in the market for two wingers, and that search could intensify if Gakpo secures a move to Tottenham. Even so, Romano made it clear: whatever happens with new arrivals, Ngumoha is not for sale.

Now the focus is on rewarding his rise. When Ngumoha first signed, Liverpool handed him the maximum three-year deal permitted for his age. TEAMtalk report that the new contract on the table will be a significant upgrade, including a major pay rise and performance-related bonuses linked to international appearances, with the club preparing for him to step fully into senior football.

The shift in mood is stark. Where there was once concern that a European heavyweight might prise him away, Liverpool are now said to “no longer fear” losing Ngumoha in the near future. They intend to build around him, not replace him.

While one winger moves closer to the heart of the project, another appears to be edging towards the exit.

A separate TEAMtalk report claims Gakpo has informed Liverpool he wants to join Tottenham Hotspur. His representatives are understood to have agreed personal terms in principle with Spurs and have now spoken directly with Liverpool’s hierarchy to make the player’s stance clear.

Gakpo has reportedly told the club he does not see his long-term future at Anfield and wants the chance to restart his Premier League career in north London.

If Liverpool cash in, they will have room – and funds – to reshape their attack. But amid all that movement, one decision is already made: Rio Ngumoha is staying, and the new contract is set to underline exactly how central he is to what comes next.
