Cristian Orozco Scores in Manchester United U21s Victory

Cristian Orozco has wasted no time showing Manchester United what they have on their hands.

The Colombian midfielder, finally able to complete his move from Fortaleza after turning 18 earlier this summer, has opened his account for the club with a goal for the Under-21s in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa U21s.

It was some way to announce himself. United’s youngsters ran riot in a 5-0 win as preparations for the new season intensified, with Orozco among the scorers in a dominant display.

• Chido Obi, who has already been in sharp form with a brace against Ipswich earlier this month, kept his hot streak going against Villa’s academy side.
• Ashton Missin also struck twice, while Amir Ibragimov added his name to the scoresheet to complete the rout.

For Orozco, though, this was an important first step in England.

United agreed a deal for the highly rated defensive midfielder last year, prising him away from his homeland after director of football Jason Wilcox led an assertive push to bring in overseas talent. The move could only be rubber-stamped once Orozco turned 18, but the club had long identified him as a prospect worth waiting for.

He arrives with only five senior appearances for Fortaleza behind him and the captaincy of Colombia’s Under-17s on his CV. His most recent competitive outing came in May, in a Copa Colombia draw with Cucuta Deportivo, a reminder of how early he still is in his professional journey.

United’s hierarchy are well aware of that. Plans are in place to let him grow away from the glare of the first team, rather than fast-tracking him into a midfield that has just been significantly reinforced.

Michael Carrick has already moved decisively in that area of the pitch, spending big on Andrey Santos and then adding Youri Tielemans after triggering the Belgian’s £35 million release clause at Aston Villa. The message is clear: the battle for places in the centre of the park will be unforgiving.

For now, that leaves Orozco operating in the shadows, learning the tempo, the physicality, the demands of English football at academy level. But goals like this, even in a closed-door friendly, do not go unnoticed at Carrington.

He will have to be patient. The pathway is crowded, the standard high. Yet with a first goal already on the board and time firmly on his side, the teenager has taken his first meaningful stride towards a senior debut in a Manchester United shirt.
