Rotherham United Sign Manchester United Defender Sonny Aljofree
Rotherham United have moved to bolster their back line with the signing of Manchester United academy defender Sonny Aljofree on a two-year deal.
The 22-year-old, comfortable at both centre-back and right-back, arrives as a free agent after leaving Old Trafford in the summer. Rotherham have also protected their position with an option to extend his contract by a further year, a clear sign they see more than just short-term cover in him.
This is not a name plucked from obscurity. Aljofree was part of the Manchester United side that lifted the FA Youth Cup in 2021-22, a competition the club treats as a marker of its next generation. He never broke through to a senior appearance, but his education came in familiar fashion for a modern defender: out on loan, under pressure, away from the safety net of a superclub.
Spells at Altrincham, Accrington Stanley and, most recently, Notts County have given him a taste of the demands lower down the pyramid. The tackles are harder, the margins tighter, the scrutiny more direct. Rotherham are betting that those experiences have hardened a technically schooled defender into a Championship-ready competitor.
There is also a family thread running through the move. Aljofree is the son of former Plymouth Argyle defender Hasney Aljofree, a player who built his career in the Football League. The Millers are getting a young defender who has grown up around the realities of this level, not just the glamour of a Premier League academy.
This is not a blind leap of faith either. Aljofree has been on trial with Rotherham throughout pre-season, training with the squad and playing his way into a contract. The club have seen him up close, measured his temperament as much as his timing in the tackle, and decided he fits.
For Aljofree, it is a reset. For Rotherham, it is a calculated step toward building a defence with both legs in the present and an eye on what he might become. The question now is simple: can a former FA Youth Cup winner turn potential into presence in the rough-and-tumble of a Rotherham season?
