Southampton Rejects Aston Villa Bid for Harwood-Bellis
Aston Villa’s defensive rebuild has hit its first major obstacle. Southampton have rejected an offer worth around £18m plus add-ons for centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis, with the south-coast club holding out for closer to £25m.
Villa’s move comes as they brace for the departure of Ezri Konsa, who is set to join Arsenal in a deal expected to exceed £50m. Losing an England international at the heart of their defence has pushed Villa into the market quickly – and firmly – but Southampton are in no mood to sell on the cheap.
Harwood-Bellis joined Saints in 2023, initially on loan, and has grown into a central figure at St Mary’s. His progress has already been recognised at international level: he earned his first England cap in a 2024 Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland.
Southampton finished fourth in the Championship last season, only for the Spygate scandal to derail their play-off campaign. That episode has not altered their valuation of key assets. Harwood-Bellis, developed in the Manchester City academy but never capped at first-team level there, is one of their most prized.
Villa’s interest comes during a summer of sharp transition at Villa Park. Since lifting the Europa League in May, they have sanctioned the exits of several important players: Youri Tielemans has joined Manchester United, Morgan Rogers has moved to Chelsea and Lucas Digne has signed for Paris St-Germain.
There could be more to come. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez and Premier League-era record scorer Ollie Watkins have both been linked with moves away, adding another layer of uncertainty to Unai Emery’s squad planning.
Villa have not stood still, though. This week they brought in goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and left-back Matteo Ruggeri, strengthening the spine and the flank in one sweep. Earlier in the window they added midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves and forward Johan Manzambi from Freiburg.
The message is clear: Villa intend to stay competitive after their European triumph. Whether that next phase includes Harwood-Bellis now depends on how far they are willing to go to meet Southampton’s price.
