Genoa's Search for a New No. 9: Taremi, Ferguson, and Lucca in Focus
Genoa’s search for a new No. 9 is turning into a race against the clock, and a familiar Serie A face has moved into view.
Mehdi Taremi, the former Inter striker who rediscovered his scoring touch at Olympiacos, is one of the names on Genoa’s shortlist as Daniele De Rossi pushes for a centre-forward before the window shuts. The Iranian hit 16 goals last season in Greece and featured at this summer’s World Cup, a profile that keeps him firmly in the conversation even if he is not at the top of it.
Ferguson still the priority – but timing is tricky
De Rossi’s ideal signing remains Evan Ferguson. The Brighton forward is the preferred profile, with talks over a loan progressing, but the deal is tangled up in medical reality. Ferguson is working his way back from ankle surgery, and the uncertainty over when he will be fully fit is slowing everything down.
Genoa cannot afford to wait forever. The longer the recovery timeline stays vague, the more pressure builds to line up alternatives.
Lucca on the radar ahead of Marassi meeting
One of those alternatives will be on the opposite team sheet this weekend. Lorenzo Lucca, currently at Napoli, is another loan option under active consideration. Genoa face Napoli at Marassi, a fixture that doubles as an on‑pitch scouting mission for a striker who fits the physical, penalty‑box profile De Rossi wants.
If Ferguson drags, Lucca’s availability instantly becomes more important.
Taremi in the mix, but not alone
That is where Taremi comes back into focus. After leaving Inter, he rebuilt his numbers at Olympiacos and remains an experienced, ready‑made option. He is not Genoa’s first choice, but he is very much in the frame, with competition from other clubs also circling for his signature.
Genoa know that if they move for him, they will not be bidding in silence.
Overseas options widen the field
De Rossi’s staff are not limiting themselves to Italy. The club are tracking Milutin Osmajic at Preston, the Montenegrin forward who offers power and mobility, and Moroccan striker Tawfik Bentayeb at Union Touarga, another potential low‑cost solution.
Every path is being explored, every profile weighed, as the market ticks down. Genoa have made it clear they will leave this window with a new centre-forward.
The only question left is which name ends up on De Rossi’s teamsheet when the dust settles.
