Rio Ngumoha's Transfer to Bayern Munich Falls Through
For a few days, it looked as though one of Liverpool’s brightest prospects was about to be prised away by Bayern Munich. Not anymore.
The proposed move taking 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha from Anfield to the Allianz Arena has collapsed, despite reports of a “full verbal agreement” between the player’s camp and the German giants.
From Chelsea prodigy to Liverpool spark
Ngumoha arrived at Liverpool from Chelsea carrying the label of “one for the future”. Last season, he accelerated that timeline.
In a bleak 2025/26 campaign for Liverpool, the teenager emerged as one of the few genuine positives. When given the chance, he injected pace, direct running and a sense of daring that often felt missing elsewhere in the side. Many around the club felt he merited more minutes than former head coach Arne Slot ultimately trusted him with.
That is why his immediate future matters. Under new manager Andoni Iraola, Liverpool are planning a more aggressive, front-foot style at Anfield. Ngumoha’s profile fits that blueprint almost perfectly, and there is a belief inside the club that he could save them serious money in the transfer market if his development continues on this trajectory.
Bayern circle as Liverpool dig in
The teenager’s progress has not gone unnoticed abroad. Bayern Munich, reshaped under Vincent Kompany and searching for a winger to compete with Luis Díaz, turned their attention to Ngumoha after missing out on Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona in a £69m deal.
On Friday, David Ornstein reported that Bayern were exploring a move for the Liverpool winger, identifying him as their primary target for the left side. Ngumoha, he said, was aware of the interest. At that stage, there had been no contact between the clubs.
Liverpool’s stance, though, was firm. According to Ornstein, the club insisted Ngumoha was not for sale and that their plan this summer is to strengthen the attack, not weaken it.
The ‘secret candidate’ and the deal that died
Behind the scenes, Bayern pushed hard. German journalist Florian Plettenberg later revealed that Ngumoha had been a “secret candidate” for weeks, with negotiations progressing quietly.
According to Plettenberg, Bayern and Ngumoha’s camp reached a full verbal agreement on Tuesday, 26 May. Kompany had personally spoken with the youngster and approved the move, viewing him as an absolute priority option to back up Díaz, alongside the club’s pursuit of Gordon.
Then, just as the story seemed to be heading in one direction, it snapped back.
Plettenberg reported that the deal collapsed on Thursday “for the time being”. No transfer, no breakthrough, despite the verbal green light on the player’s side. Any further progress would have required club-to-club agreement, and Liverpool’s position has remained resistant.
Bayern are now expected to continue exploring other attacking options, including deals for players such as Johan Bakayoko (Brown) and Ismael Saibari, while Ngumoha stays put.
A pivotal summer for a 17-year-old
For Liverpool, the collapse of Bayern’s move underlines how highly they value Ngumoha. Internally, there has already been talk of a new contract and a bigger role next season. Externally, one of Europe’s powerhouses has just tried – and failed – to lure him away.
The winger will report back to a club in transition, under a coach whose style should suit his instincts. He is 17, already tested, already trusted by some in the hierarchy to “explode” next season.
Bayern came calling. Liverpool said no. What Ngumoha does with that vote of confidence now will define the next chapter of his rise.
