Real Madrid vs Málaga: Mourinho, Mbappé and a Statement Fixture

For the first time since 2018, Málaga CF are heading back to the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. The timing could hardly be more daunting. Waiting for them: Kylian Mbappé’s Real Madrid, two wins from two, goals flowing, and a fanbase already sensing something brewing under Jose Mourinho.

This is matchweek 3 of LaLiga 2026-27, but it already feels like a statement fixture.

Mourinho’s Madrid start to click

Mourinho’s return to Spain has begun with the kind of edge he thrives on. Real Madrid opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over Espanyol, then tore into Real Sociedad in a 4-1 victory that underlined the attacking power at his disposal.

They’ve scored six in two games. They haven’t kept a clean sheet yet. That balance will irritate Mourinho.

At the back, Ibrahima Konaté has struggled to find rhythm, underperforming in both league outings so far. The defensive line hasn’t completely convinced, even as the scorelines have. The upside for Madrid: Dean Huijsen, Denzel Dumfries and Álvaro Carreras have started the season brightly, offering energy and aggression in the defensive unit.

Higher up the pitch, the pieces are beginning to fall into place. Bernardo Silva finally produced the kind of performance Madrid signed him for against Real Sociedad. His control in midfield, his timing on the ball, his ability to dictate tempo – it was his most complete display since arriving at the club.

Alongside him, captain Federico Valverde continues to drive this team with his usual intensity, while Arda Güler is quietly knitting play together, adding craft between the lines. The spine looks strong. The talent around it looks frightening.

Mbappé fully fit – and in full flow

There is no mystery around Kylian Mbappé’s availability. The 27-year-old is fully fit, training normally with the first team and set to feature against Málaga.

His last league outing was a reminder of why Madrid moved the world to bring him in. Mbappé delivered a sensational hat-trick, tormenting Real Sociedad’s defence with constant movement, pace and ruthless finishing. Every time he picked up the ball, danger followed.

Even more encouraging for Madrid is the growing understanding between Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior. That trio was always going to define this project; now, under Mourinho, the relationships are beginning to sharpen. Runs are being anticipated. Spaces are being created and exploited. Defenders are being pulled apart.

If they keep building this chemistry, the rest of LaLiga will have a serious problem.

Málaga’s uphill battle

Málaga arrive in Madrid still searching for their first win of the new season. That alone makes this a daunting trip. Doing it at the Bernabéu, against a side chasing a third straight victory, raises the difficulty level even further.

Los Blanquiazules have not faced Real Madrid since 2018. The gap between the clubs has only widened since then. Away from home, up against a squad stacked with elite talent and confidence, Málaga will need near-perfect discipline and a ruthless edge on the counter just to stay in the contest.

Real Madrid, by contrast, know this is an opportunity. Three wins from three would not only cement their strong start but also send another clear message about their title intent. The clean sheet still eludes them, the defensive questions remain, but the sheer quality in this squad makes them overwhelming favourites.

Mourinho will demand more control, more solidity, fewer lapses. Mbappé, Bellingham, Vinícius and company will chase goals and spectacle. Málaga will try to spoil the party.

At the Bernabéu, with this cast, the stage is set.
