Moises Caicedo's Fitness Key for Chelsea Against Brighton
Chelsea face Brighton on Sunday with one question towering over the rest: is Moises Caicedo ready?
Xabi Alonso wants his midfield anchor back at Stamford Bridge. Caicedo, though, is still being monitored after picking up an injury in training last week, one that kept him out of the wins over Fulham and Luton Town.
“He is hopefully training [on Friday]. We are hopeful he can be involved. We are still checking; no decision made,” Alonso said. Optimism, yes. Certainty, no.
Caicedo call will define Chelsea’s midfield
If Caicedo makes it, Chelsea gain control, aggression and structure in the middle of the pitch. If he does not, Alonso has to improvise.
Reece James, Valentin Barco and Romeo Lavia are all available and give him different shapes to work with. Enzo Fernandez is the other live issue. He was expected to be in the squad against Luton but did not make it, with interest from Manchester City swirling in the background. For now, though, the only thing that matters is whether Alonso deems him fit and focused enough to play.
Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra remain out, which trims the options. That is why Caicedo’s status feels so decisive. Chelsea can patch things together without him. They are simply a stronger, more convincing side when he starts.
Martinez arrival puts spotlight on Sanchez
In goal, the situation is becoming hard to ignore. Robert Sanchez looks to be sliding down the pecking order after Chelsea agreed a £7.5 million deal with Aston Villa for Emiliano Martinez.
Mike Penders started and kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 win over Luton, with Sanchez left on the bench. Alonso has already chosen his goalkeeper for Brighton, but he is not revealing it publicly. The message is clear enough: the position is no longer locked down.
Defensive boost and careful Colwill management
There is better news at the back. Wesley Fofana returns from suspension and is in line for his first competitive appearance of the season, a significant boost to Chelsea’s defensive spine.
Young defender Josh Acheampong is also expected to be in the squad, underlining the trust in the academy pathway. Levi Colwill and Geovany Quenda missed the Luton game, but Alonso downplayed any serious concern.
“Our plan is that they are training [Friday] preparing for Sunday. With Levi, we know three games in a week after the injury, missing a period, he needs to take the right steps. We don’t want to push him too much. So he feels comfortable,” Alonso explained. The message: manage minutes now, avoid problems later.
Palmer to lead evolving attack
Up front, Cole Palmer played the full 90 minutes on Thursday and nothing suggests he will be rested. He is expected to start again, forming part of an evolving attacking unit with Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro as Chelsea try to sharpen a new-look frontline.
The predicted XI leans into that freshness and youth, with a 3-4-2-1 setup:
Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Acheampong; Gusto, Caicedo, James, Chavarria; Palmer, Rogers; Joao Pedro.
Caicedo and Fernandez are the main doubts. Palestra and Henderson are out. Kick-off is 2pm BST on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Stamford Bridge.
Strip it back and Chelsea’s brief is brutally simple: get Caicedo on the pitch, settle the goalkeeper, and win the fight where it matters most — in midfield.
