Rafael Leao Discusses Future with AC Milan and Potential Move
Rafael Leao stands on a balcony in Brazil, talking about fashion – and his future. The clothes are his own brand, the spotlight is his as always, but the subject keeps drifting back to AC Milan and what comes next.
The answer, for the first time, sounds close to goodbye.
“We'd already talked to the Rossoneri about the possibility of going elsewhere. But as long as I'm with them, I'll give it my all,” he said, speaking at an event for his clothing line before expanding on the situation on the Brazilian podcast “Podpah”.
This is not a throwaway remark from a player caught off guard. It fits a pattern. Since early June, the 27-year-old has been open about the idea of a new chapter, and the dialogue with Milan has clearly moved beyond hypotheticals.
A seven-year bond under strain
Leao has been in red and black for seven seasons, a long stretch in modern football and a period in which Milan helped turn a raw, electric forward into a headline name. He does not hide that debt.
“I think it's a club that has helped me a lot in every way,” he said. The gratitude is genuine, but it now sits alongside something else: ambition.
“In life, you have ambitions for other things too. If it happens, I'll study my options, but I'll remain an AC Milan player.”
That duality runs through every sentence. A player who knows the door is open, but who refuses to be the one seen kicking it down.
On the pitch, the numbers tell a mixed story. Nine goals and three assists in Serie A is a respectable return, yet by his own standards the season was uneven, marked by stretches where his impact waned. Around him, the sense of a growing rift with the club only deepened, the relationship fraying just enough for the idea of leaving to stop being taboo.
Fenerbahce circle as decision day looms
While Leao talks in careful, respectful tones, the market moves with less subtlety. After the World Cup and with his return to Milanello scheduled for the 29th, his entourage has, according to reports, already been in negotiations with Fenerbahce.
The Turkish side see an opportunity: a top-level attacker with years at a European giant, perhaps ready for a new environment and a central role. For Milan, it is a more delicate equation. Lose a player who has long been a symbol of their resurgence, or keep an increasingly restless star who has already “spoken to the club about the possibility of trying a new experience”.
“I don't know if it will happen,” Leao admitted. “I have to report to Milanello on the 29th, and while I'm there, I'll give my all, always respecting the club that has given me everything.”
No ultimatums. No transfer requests. Just a clear message: the conversation about leaving is real, and it has already taken place.
Between loyalty and the leap
Strip away the polite framing and the picture is stark. Leao is edging towards the exit, but he wants to leave on his terms – with his effort unquestioned and his bond with the fans intact.
He will walk back through the gates of Milanello on the 29th as an AC Milan player. How long he stays inside them now depends on whether ambition, gratitude, or the pull of a new adventure wins out.
