Sergio Busquets Returns to Barcelona as Assistant Coach
Sergio Busquets is back at Barcelona. Not in midfield this time, but on the touchline.
The club icon has officially started his coaching journey by returning as assistant coach of Barca Atletic, the reserve side that feeds directly into the first team. The appointment was confirmed on Monday, August 17, and it ends a short, calculated break from the game after his spell at Inter Miami and his retirement at the end of last year.
For Barcelona, it is an emotional reunion. For Busquets, it is a clear statement of intent.
From sabbatical to the dugout
When he walked away from professional football, Busquets made it clear he needed distance. After an Inter Miami match against the New England Revolution in October, he was asked in the mixed zone whether management would be his next step.
"I think in the future, yes, but for now I prefer to take a sabbatical year," he said.
He took that time. Now the pause is over.
Busquets returns to the club where he became one of the defining midfielders of his generation, swapping the rhythm of the pivot role for the demands of the technical area. The gap between his last Barcelona appearance and this comeback is only three years, but the context is very different: this time his job is to shape others.
Learning under Belletti, building for tomorrow
At Barca Atletic, Busquets will join the staff led by current head coach Belletti. The pair will work side by side with a clear mission: develop the next wave of talent and push the reserve team back up the Spanish league structure.
Busquets is not just there as a figurehead. He will immediately begin daily work on the training ground and on matchdays, helping guide a young squad that dreams of following the same pathway he once took from the academy to the Camp Nou spotlight.
At the same time, he will be working through his UEFA coaching licences, a crucial step toward earning his senior head coaching badges. The classroom and the touchline will run in parallel, theory feeding into practice as he learns a new craft at a club that already knows every detail of his playing career.
This appointment feels like a natural first rung on the ladder. Barcelona gain a legend steeped in the club’s philosophy to help mould their prospects. Busquets gains a laboratory in which to test his ideas, make mistakes, and grow.
The foundations are laid. The question now is how quickly Sergio Busquets will climb from Barca Atletic assistant to the front line of senior management.
