Owen Wijndal Leaves Ajax as Left-Back Hierarchy Changes

Owen Wijndal’s time at Ajax is over. Effective immediately.

The 26-year-old left-back has agreed to terminate his contract with the Amsterdam club, Voetbal International reports, after slipping completely out of the picture for playing time. His deal at the Johan Cruyff ArenA had been set to run until mid-2027, but both sides have chosen a clean break. His next club is not yet known.

This is not a decision born overnight. In recent weeks, Ajax and Wijndal held talks to find a way out of a stalemate: a high-earning defender with little realistic chance of minutes, and a club reshaping its squad and wage bill. The outcome arrived this week. Contract cancelled, future open. On Wednesday, Wijndal said his goodbyes to team-mates.

The writing had been on the wall since the summer.

Ajax brought in two new left-backs: Caio Henrique and 19-year-old Spaniard Jofre Torrents. Henrique quickly moved ahead of Wijndal in the hierarchy, and last weekend suggested the same fate with Torrents. In the 0-4 win over Telstar, Torrents came off the bench to get minutes. Wijndal did not move. Ninety minutes on the bench, and a clear message.

For Ajax, the termination does more than resolve a sporting issue. It frees up space in the wage structure as the club continues to rebuild after a turbulent period. For Wijndal, it removes a dead end.

The Zaandam-born defender joined Ajax from AZ in 2022 for around €10 million, arriving as one of the most highly regarded left-backs in the Eredivisie and a long-term option for the national and European stage. The trajectory never quite matched the expectation.

Last season, Ajax sent him on loan to Royal Antwerp FC for the 2023/24 campaign, a sign that his place in Amsterdam was already under threat. On his return, the competition only intensified with new signings and a fresh start under a different squad dynamic.

Across his spell at Ajax, Wijndal made 77 official appearances, scoring 3 goals and providing 7 assists. Respectable numbers, but ultimately not enough to secure his place in a new-look side.

Now, at 26 and a free agent, he enters the market at a pivotal age for a defender. Ajax move on with Caio Henrique and Jofre Torrents on the left. Wijndal moves on in search of a club willing to make him first choice again.

The only question left is where he will restart a career that once seemed locked into the Dutch top tier for years to come.
