Norgaard Leaves Arsenal for Massive Everton Opportunity

Christian Norgaard’s short, stop-start spell at Arsenal is over. The Danish midfielder left north London on Wednesday, sealing a £7million move to Everton and a two-year contract at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

At 32, this is a late-career pivot rather than a project signing. He becomes Everton’s third arrival of the summer, slotting in behind Hayden Hackney and the swift return of former loanee Tyrique George. David Moyes wanted experience and know-how in the middle of the pitch. He has it now.

For Arsenal, the deal underlines a ruthless evolution from a position of strength. Norgaard managed just 20 appearances in all competitions in his debut season, with only seven Premier League starts. In a campaign that ended with a first league title in 22 years and a run to the Champions League final, he lived largely on the fringes.

The writing was on the wall even before Arsenal pushed through a £75m agreement with Newcastle for Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who passed a medical on Wednesday and signed a four-year deal. Once that move is rubber-stamped, the traffic in Mikel Arteta’s midfield becomes even heavier. Someone had to step aside.

Arteta, though, refused to let Norgaard’s contribution be written off as a footnote.

Speaking after Arsenal’s 3-1 pre-season defeat to Real Betis at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, the manager was emphatic about the Dane’s influence in the dressing room as much as on the pitch.

“When I brought him here, I said that he could be our glue player – an incredible capacity to bring people together, to keep the standards high,” Arteta said, stressing the less visible work that underpinned a historic season. “When he played, he had some really good moments as well, but I understand that to fulfil that role for a long period is not easy.”

That word “glue” matters. Norgaard arrived from Brentford with a reputation as a leader, a steadying presence who could raise the floor of a squad aiming to climb to the very top. He never became a headline act at the Emirates, but inside the camp, his influence clearly ran deeper than the minutes column suggests.

Now he gets something different: a central role, not a supporting one. Arteta, who began his own Premier League playing career at Everton, did not hide his respect for the move.

“He had a massive opportunity with a manager and a club that I know really well and we wish him all the best and thank him,” he said.

For Moyes, the appeal is obvious. Norgaard brings Premier League experience, tactical discipline and a proven ability to knit together a side. At a club looking to stabilise and climb, that blend of reliability and personality is gold dust.

For Arsenal, the outgoings keep coming. Norgaard follows Leandro Trossard out of the door after the Belgian winger joined Besiktas last month in a £15.3m deal. The champions’ squad is being trimmed, reshaped and, in some cases, upgraded.

More departures are expected before the September 1 deadline. The futures of Gabriel Jesus, Ethan Nwaneri, Reiss Nelson and Fabio Vieira remain uncertain, while Spanish second-tier side Las Palmas are working on a loan move for young goalkeeper Tommy Setford, according to reports.

The champions are not standing still. Everton, meanwhile, have just handed a seasoned midfielder the “massive opportunity” he has been waiting for. Now Norgaard has to turn that chance into something more than a thank-you note from his former manager.
