Nkunku Transfer Saga: Newcastle vs Leipzig
Christopher Nkunku is back at a crossroads – and this time the decision looks as much about emotion as money.
Italian reports say Newcastle United have submitted the most attractive proposal to Milan for the French forward, yet Nkunku’s preference is clear: he wants RB Leipzig.
The 28-year-old has been frozen out under new Milan coach Ruben Amorim. He has no squad place, no shirt number, and no role in the Portuguese coach’s plans. Just a year after arriving from Chelsea in a deal worth €37m plus add-ons, Milan have quietly put him on the market.
His numbers in Italy were respectable rather than spectacular: eight goals and three assists in 35 competitive games. Enough to show flashes, not enough to secure his status when a new coach walked through the door.
Now the phones are ringing.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that both Newcastle United and RB Leipzig are in direct talks with Milan. Neither negotiation is close to the finish line yet, but the outlines are emerging.
Newcastle, according to Calciomercato and Milan reporter Daniele Longo, have made the strongest financial offer so far. The Premier League club are said to be ready to put €30m on the table to sign the France international outright, a figure that would hand Milan a quick exit route from a signing that never fully ignited.
But the money doesn’t tell the whole story.
Nkunku’s best football lives in Leipzig. From 2019 to 2023 he tore through the Bundesliga, hitting 70 goals and 56 assists in 172 games for the German side. Those four seasons turned him from a talented prospect into one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking midfielders, a player who thrived in a system built around his movement and creativity.
That peak has felt distant since his big-money move to Chelsea in the summer of 2023 for around €60m. Injuries, inconsistency and constant change at Stamford Bridge stalled his momentum. The subsequent switch to Milan has not reset his career in the way he or the club hoped.
Decision Time
So the choice is stark.
Newcastle can offer the Premier League stage, a major project, and a strong fee that satisfies Milan. Leipzig can offer familiarity, a proven platform and a club where Nkunku already knows exactly how to shine.
Milan hold the contract and the leverage. Newcastle hold the best offer. Leipzig hold the memories.
Nkunku must decide which of those matters most to the next chapter of his career.
