Balogun Transfer Race: Aston Villa and Barcelona Join Spurs in €60m Chase

Folarin Balogun has gone from rising prospect to one of the most coveted forwards in Europe in a single season. Now the scramble to sign him is fully underway.

After a 19-goal campaign for Monaco and an eye-catching World Cup with the United States, the 25-year-old has drawn firm interest from Aston Villa and Barcelona, according to French outlet L’Equipe. Tottenham Hotspur were first to make a serious move, opening formal talks over a €60 million deal, but they no longer have a clear run at the striker.

Villa’s contingency plan, Barcelona’s rebuild

At Villa, Balogun is being tracked as part of a wider contingency plan. The club are bracing for the possibility that Ollie Watkins could be tempted away by Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. Should that domino fall, Villa want to be ready with a proven, mobile No 9 who can slot straight into a European-chasing side. Balogun fits that bill.

Barcelona’s need is even more urgent. Having parted ways with both Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, they are short of firepower and experience in the final third. Their recruitment drive has swung towards Balogun as they look to reconstruct an attack that has lost its focal point and much of its depth in one window.

The American’s blend of pace, movement and penalty-box instincts has pushed him high up their shortlist. With the market ticking towards its September 1 deadline, they cannot afford to dither.

Monaco ready to deal – at a price

Monaco, for their part, know exactly what they have – and what it could fund. The club are understood to be open to a sale at around €60m, using Balogun’s value to bankroll further squad building, echoing the approach they took when Maghnes Akliouche departed for Paris Saint-Germain.

Spurs, aware of the growing competition, have sounded out alternative options, including Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush. Yet Balogun remains their preferred choice to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s frontline, a long-term answer to the goalscoring void that has lingered since Harry Kane’s exit.

The pressure is building. Three major clubs. One price tag. A shrinking window.

Luis fighting to keep his talisman

Inside Monaco, though, there is still a strong desire to resist the tide. Head coach Filipe Luis has been clear about how much he values his striker and how turbulent the coming weeks could be.

“He is one of our players. I know he’s going to receive a lot of offers given his last season and his World Cup performance,” Luis said recently, underlining both Balogun’s rise and the inevitability of bids.

“He’s a special player. You don’t find many players on the market with his attributes. If he stays, I’ll be really, really happy to have him with us.”

That attachment has already had an impact on team selection. Balogun sat out Monaco’s 3-2 Europa Conference League playoff win over Gornik Zabrze in Poland, even though he has been registered on the UEFA squad list. It was a decision that spoke loudly: Monaco are protecting an asset whose future is being thrashed out away from the pitch.

Countdown to September 1

Time, though, is running out. Tottenham, Villa and Barcelona must decide whether to meet Monaco’s €60m valuation before the window closes on September 1, or risk watching a key target slip away to a rival.

Balogun is expected back in full training shortly, and a call on his involvement in Sunday’s Ligue 1 clash with Le Havre is imminent. Play him, and Monaco risk injury at the most delicate moment of negotiations. Leave him out again, and the message is just as clear.

The question now is not whether the offers arrive. It’s who is bold enough to pay the price, and whether Balogun’s next goal will come in the Premier League, La Liga, or in Monaco colours for one final season.
