Usain Bolt Joins Wythenshawe FC Veterans

Usain Bolt, the fastest man in history, is poised to swap the starting blocks for Sunday league pitches in Greater Manchester after his name appeared on an amateur team’s official squad list.

The eight-time Olympic champion, who still owns the 100m and 200m world records, is listed as a player for Wythenshawe FC Veterans on the Football Association’s Full-Time website, hinting at one of the most eye-catching signings Sunday football has ever seen.

A Sunday league side packed with stars

This is no ordinary veterans’ team. Wythenshawe FC Veterans compete in the Cheshire Veterans League with a squad that reads like a roll call from the Premier League years.

The side is managed by former Manchester City and Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Ireland and has already become a magnet for ex-top-flight talent. Danny Drinkwater, Antonio Valencia, Joleon Lescott, Emile Heskey, Marc Albrighton, Nedum Onuoha and Papiss Cissé have all turned out for the club.

Last season alone, Wythenshawe’s squad collectively boasted more than 1,800 English top-flight appearances. Now, they may be about to add the greatest sprinter of all time to that already lavish mix.

Bolt’s football dream refuses to fade

Bolt, now 40, has never hidden his love for football. After calling time on his glittering sprint career following the 2017 World Championships, he made a serious attempt to break into the professional game, enjoying a brief spell with Australian side Central Coast Mariners.

A devoted Manchester United supporter, the Jamaican has been a familiar figure in Soccer Aid charity matches over the last decade, regularly drawing crowds and cameras whenever he laces up his boots.

A move into veterans’ football in the Manchester area would marry his fandom and his lingering football ambition, placing him in a dressing room of seasoned pros who once lit up the Premier League.

For now, though, there is still one missing piece. Wythenshawe have yet to formally announce Bolt’s arrival and have been contacted for comment. The name is on the list. The football world waits to see if the legend actually walks out on a Sunday afternoon in Greater Manchester.
