Newcastle United Nears €60m Deal for Johan Manzambi

Newcastle United are on the brink of landing one of Europe’s most coveted young midfielders, with Sky Germany reporting a €60m agreement with Freiburg for 20-year-old Johan Manzambi.

The clubs have settled on a fee and the structure of the deal, leaving Newcastle to iron out the final details with the player’s camp. Manzambi is expected to sign a long-term contract on Tyneside, a statement move for a club intent on accelerating its rise among the Premier League elite.

Newcastle Win the Race

Aston Villa had pushed to be in the conversation. Amadou Onana’s ACL injury at the 2026 FIFA World Cup forced them into the market, and Manzambi quickly emerged as one of their preferred options.

But the pull of Newcastle’s project, and their willingness to go to €60m, has put them firmly in control of the chase. Villa are left looking elsewhere; Newcastle, barring late drama, are about to add a dynamic, goal-threatening midfielder to Eddie Howe’s armoury.

A Breakout Star

Manzambi’s price tag reflects a rapid rise rather than a long résumé. This summer’s tournament has turned him from promising Bundesliga talent into a headline name.

For Switzerland, he has already produced three goals and two assists, driving their run to the quarter-finals, where they will meet Argentina after edging Colombia on penalties. His influence has been obvious, even if he is currently sidelined and unable to feature.

His domestic numbers back up the hype. Last season at Freiburg, Manzambi scored five goals and supplied four assists in 27 Bundesliga appearances, a strong return for a 20-year-old operating in midfield. He has shown he can hurt teams between the lines, arrive late in the box, and still shoulder responsibility in build-up play.

A Big Fee, a Bigger Responsibility

€60m for a 20-year-old carries weight. Newcastle are not paying for a finished article; they are paying for a player whose trajectory points sharply upwards, one who has already shown he can deliver on major stages.

Freiburg lose a rising star. Newcastle, if the final details fall into place as expected, gain a midfielder built for the modern game and already battle-tested against World Cup opposition.

Switzerland now prepare for Argentina without him on the pitch. Newcastle prepare for a new season expecting him at the heart of their future.
