David Moyes Addresses Everton's Light Squad After Transfer Window

David Moyes did not bother dressing it up. Everton’s squad is light, the transfer window ended badly, and the Premier League schedule will not show mercy.

But it will, he insists, open the door.

The Everton manager heads into this weekend’s clash with Manchester United knowing he has named just 19 senior players in his 25-man Premier League squad. The numbers tell their own story. So does the exodus.

Beto, Adam Aznou, Nathan Patterson, Iliman Ndiaye and Tim Iroegbunam all left in the final days of the window, stripping depth from a group that was already thin. Everton moved to bring back Jack Grealish on loan and added Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon, but a failed push for Folarin Balogun underlined a chaotic, punishing end to the club’s summer business.

The result: gaps everywhere, opportunity everywhere.

At Finch Farm, in his pre-match press conference, Moyes cut a realistic but defiant figure as he assessed what he has been left to work with.

“I know what I needed and I know what it’s like to build a squad for the Premier League,” he said. “I know the numbers you need. I’ve been around long enough to know that, but some things went against us and some things could have gone better. Ultimately, we didn’t want to lose a lot of the players, but for different reasons that had to happen.”

The scale of the issue is stark. Everton have registered only 19 senior players, leaning heavily on youth to plug the gaps. Harrison Armstrong, Tyrique George and Tyler Dibling are all listed in the under-21 group but are now very much part of the first-team conversation.

This is where Moyes turns a problem into a challenge.

“They’re all going to have to be able to muck in as we’ve got a real small squad now,” he said. “It gives opportunities to some people who have not had them and sometimes in football you need to be given that chance so that you can show what you can do.

“Let’s see if some of them can do that. I have no concerns. I am sure they will be fully at-it.”

The message is clear: there will be no hiding places. Fringe players become squad players overnight; youngsters move from the periphery to the pitch.

Against Manchester United, with the spotlight fierce and the options limited, Everton will discover quickly who is ready to grab that chance.
