Mohamed Salah's Future: Saudi Arabia or MLS?

Mohamed Salah has stepped into the rarest of spaces in a modern superstar’s career: total freedom.

Egypt’s World Cup exit at the hands of Argentina has drawn a line under one chapter. Days later, his Liverpool contract was terminated a year early by mutual agreement, ending a glittering era at Anfield and turning one of the game’s most recognisable forwards into the most coveted free agent of the summer.

Now he has a choice to make. And it is no longer about Europe.

Saudi or Stateside

TEAMtalk understands Salah has narrowed his next move to two very different stages: the Saudi Pro League or Major League Soccer. European clubs have made enquiries, sounded out the possibility of one last run at the Champions League with a proven elite scorer, but those conversations are fading into the background. The expectation among those close to the situation is clear: his future lies either in Saudi Arabia or the United States.

Saudi Arabia has been working towards this moment for years. League officials view Salah as the ideal figurehead, a player who carries not only sporting weight but cultural reach across the Arab world and beyond. According to sources, a deal in principle with the league is already in place. The framework is there. What remains unresolved is the badge on his chest.

That is where geography comes in.

Westward pull and a short flight home

For Salah, this is not just about salary or spotlight. Location is central. The Egyptian captain is understood to favour clubs in the west of Saudi Arabia, close to the Red Sea and, crucially, closer to home.

Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli, both based in Jeddah, are viewed as particularly attractive. Cairo sits only around a two-hour flight away, a detail that carries real weight for a player who has long balanced a global career with a powerful sense of responsibility to his country and community.

Another option on the table is Neom Sports Club, the ambitious project based in Tabuk. Its proximity to Egypt is even greater, offering an easier route home throughout the season and aligning neatly with Salah’s geographic priorities. For a 34-year-old who has carried enormous physical and emotional load for club and country, that kind of access matters.

Saudi’s pitch is obvious: money, profile, and a central role in a league determined to reshape the football landscape. Salah would arrive not as another star, but as the star.

MLS makes its case

Yet the pull of the United States remains strong.

Salah and his representatives have been carefully weighing a move to MLS, intrigued by a league that has become a magnet for global names looking for a new kind of challenge and lifestyle. Inter Miami, fronted by David Beckham, have maintained their interest and explored ways to bring him to Florida. After securing Casemiro, though, a deal for another marquee contract is understood to be extremely difficult to structure.

That has opened the door for a different kind of project: San Diego FC.

The expansion club has moved decisively, positioning itself as a serious contender for Salah’s signature. Their bid carries a unique twist. The club is owned by Egyptian-born billionaire Sir Mohamed Mansour, a connection that has been well received within Salah’s camp. The idea of joining an ambitious new franchise with Egyptian ownership, in a city like San Diego, has obvious appeal.

The prospect of life in California – the climate, the relative privacy, the growing football culture – adds another layer. MLS offers a different rhythm, a different spotlight, and a softer landing from the intensity of European and international scrutiny.

Europe fades from view

For all the interest from within Europe, the reality is hardening. Clubs have called, asked about his availability, explored the possibility of short-term deals. But the momentum is elsewhere. Sources indicate a move within Europe is now increasingly unlikely.

At this stage of his career, Salah is weighing projects, not just teams. Saudi Arabia offers regional proximity, enormous financial power, and the chance to become the face of a league still in its aggressive growth phase. MLS offers lifestyle, a new market, and the opportunity to help shape a club’s identity from the ground up.

Two continents. Two visions. One of the most high-profile free transfers of the summer hanging in the balance.

For now, Salah is in no rush. He is taking his time, listening, asking questions, and measuring what matters most in the final prime years of a remarkable career.

The next shirt he pulls on will say a lot about how he wants that story to be told.
