Mohamed Salah Celebrates Birth of Son Leil in Liverpool

Mohamed Salah has slipped quietly back into Liverpool, the city he once lit up on a weekly basis, for one of the most personal milestones of his life: the birth of his first son.

The former Anfield hero, who left Merseyside in the summer after agreeing to terminate his contract a year early, returned to the north west as his wife Magi gave birth to their third child. The boy has been named Leil – a name that translates as “night” in Arabic – with Salah’s sister Rabab revealing the news and the name on social media.

It is a new chapter for a family that grew up in front of Liverpool supporters’ eyes. Salah and Magi, childhood sweethearts from their hometown of Nagrig, married in 2013. Their first daughter, Makka, arrived in 2014, followed by Kayan in 2020. Now comes Leil, the couple’s first son, born in the city where Salah became a global icon.

Salah, now 34, is rebuilding his career in Turkey with Trabzonspor after his Liverpool deal, signed in 2025 and meant to run for two more years, was ripped up 12 months early. The Egyptian had spoken openly about how settled his family felt on Merseyside and how keen they were to stay.

“They feel at home [here],” he said previously of Magi and the children. “They were very happy that we're staying another two years. It feels like home so everyone was happy.”

That sense of belonging made his summer exit all the more striking. Yet Liverpool still frames the biggest moments of his life. Nearly a decade based in the city, and now his son born there too.

The family celebrations have coincided with upheaval at his new club. Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan revealed that Salah’s trip abroad came straight after the side’s clash with Amed SK, and that he was not the only high‑profile player marking a new arrival.

“After the (Amed SK) match, I travelled abroad with Salah and Andre Onana,” Dogan told 61saat. “Both of them had new children, Onana had twins and Salah a baby boy. I congratulate their families and their wives.”

While life off the pitch has brought joy, Salah’s start in Turkey has been far more turbulent. Trabzonspor have already parted company with head coach Fatih Tekke following a bruising 5-0 aggregate defeat to Ferencvaros in the Europa League play-offs, a result that underlined the size of the task facing the club’s senior players.

Salah responded with a pointed message on social media, leaning on the resilience that has defined his career. “Nothing in my career ever came easy. Bad nights and disappointments are part of football, and I have learned to turn them into motivation and into trophies,” he wrote.

“Trabzonspor is my club, and I am part of this project, body and soul. Last night will not change that. I know expectations are high, and I truly believe we can and will deliver. ‘I came here to win’ is not just a slogan to me.”

Between the lines, it was a statement of intent: a player who has just welcomed a son, who has already conquered England and Europe, insisting he is not in Turkey to wind down.

From Nagrig to Liverpool, from Anfield glory to a fresh start on the Black Sea, Salah now carries a new name with him on that journey. Leil – born in the city that still feels like home, as his father sets out to prove he can build something just as meaningful in Trabzon.
