Concerns Over Premier League Demands

Although Arsenal needed reinforcements after losing Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, Arteta doubted if Fofana could handle the intense physicality and pace of the Premier League. According to The Athletic, even with Fofana’s technical skill and speed, the coaching staff worried he wouldn’t make the immediate impact required for a side aiming to challenge for the title.

Financial Issues and UEFA Restrictions

Aside from tactical concerns, Arsenal faced financial limitations. Lyon demanded around £30 million for Fofana, hoping to raise funds after missing out on the Champions League. Arsenal preferred a loan deal to avoid breaching UEFA’s spending rules. This mismatch between a permanent transfer fee and a temporary loan led to Arsenal stepping back.

The Gunners had also missed out on other targets like Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior. A late attempt to sign Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez failed as the Argentine was reluctant to return to England.

Sunderland Clinch the Deal

With Arsenal withdrawing, a fierce battle for Fofana emerged between Sunderland and Crystal Palace. Sunderland triumphed after offering a better commission to the player’s agents, securing him on a five-year contract.
