Mike Dean Clarifies Controversial Referee Claims

Mike Dean has moved to clarify his explosive claims that he “played games” while refereeing Premier League matches, as several top-flight clubs launch internal checks into his conduct.

The 58-year-old former official sparked uproar this week on Jamie Vardy’s podcast, where he openly described setting himself on-field challenges during his pre-VAR days – including seeing how long he could go without blowing his whistle.

The backlash was instant. Now Dean has issued a statement insisting that, whatever he might have joked about, he always applied the Laws of the Game properly.

Posting on Instagram, Dean wrote: “Throughout my 25 years as a professional referee, I have always applied the laws of the game to the best of my ability.

“My approach as a referee was always to allow the game to flow and whenever possible I preferred to apply a high threshold for contact which the players liked.

“However, if I saw a foul challenge that needed me to take the appropriate action I would give it from the correct position.

“At no stage was it my intention to question, criticise or undermine the integrity of refereeing in this country.

“I have always respected the profession and the responsibility that comes with being a referee.”

“Games” in the middle of Premier League matches

The storm traces back to Dean’s appearance on The Vardy Party Podcast, where he detailed the “games” he says he played during top-flight fixtures.

“There used to be games we’d have, as a laugh,” he said.

“We used to say, ‘we’ll kick-off now, right, see how long we can go without blowing a whistle’.

“I done that a few times in the Premier League, before VAR obviously. Went 20, 25 minutes without blowing a whistle.

“Few times… let it go, let it go, let it go.”

Dean went further, revealing another personal challenge that raised even more eyebrows.

“I used to do another thing in the Premier League. I used to stand in the centre circle, see how long I could stay in the centre circle, before I had to leave.

“That was just me, joking about. The lads that used to be on the line would say ‘you can’t’.

“I got to about 15 minutes once, in one game.”

Those comments detonated across fanbases and boardrooms. Supporters began trawling old, pre-VAR footage, while senior figures at several clubs asked their video analysts to check whether any of Dean’s antics could be spotted on historical match feeds.

Refereeing chiefs unconvinced

Inside the refereeing ranks, the reaction has been scathing.

SunSport understands that officials at Pro Ref greeted Dean’s claims with deep scepticism. His words are said to have caused shock and anger within the organisation, where some believe he has drifted into the role of an attention-seeker since swapping the pitch for the studio.

The feeling at Pro Ref is that there is nothing substantive to support his boasts, with figures there convinced he was playing up to the podcast audience rather than giving a literal account of his refereeing style.

Dean, who retired from on-field duties and has since become a regular on Soccer Saturday, now finds himself caught between his old profession and his new media profile.

Several of his former colleagues have not held back. Mark Halsey, SunSport’s refereeing columnist and once a fellow Premier League official, branded the comments “nonsense” and accused Dean of going on an “ego trip”.

Another ex-top flight referee, Graham Scott, dismissed the remarks as “dispiriting clickbait”.

The lines are clear. Clubs are digging through the footage, refereeing chiefs are bristling, and Dean is adamant he always upheld the laws.

The question now is whether his words live on as ill-judged showbiz patter – or as a line that Premier League referees simply cannot afford to cross.
