Maxi Araujo: Premier League Clubs Eye Sporting Star After World Cup Performances
The World Cup has a habit of turning smart club scouting into a scramble. Maxi Araujo is fast becoming the latest example.
The Sporting CP left-back, fresh from a standout season in Lisbon, has forced his way onto the shortlists of Manchester United and Chelsea, joining Arsenal in a rapidly swelling Premier League queue for his signature, according to reports in Portugal.
A season that demanded attention
Araujo, 26, has just delivered the kind of campaign that makes recruitment departments sit up. Used both as a traditional left-back and as an aggressive wing-back, he finished Sporting’s 2025/26 season with seven goals and six assists in all competitions – elite numbers for a defender in a side chasing honours on multiple fronts.
Those performances did not go unnoticed in England. Arsenal, who faced Sporting in the Champions League quarter-finals, were the first to make a move. Back in April, the Gunners were reported to have made initial contact over a switch to The Emirates after Mikel Arteta was left impressed by Araujo’s displays across the two legs.
Since then, Arsenal have tied up a permanent deal for Piero Hincapie, slightly altering the landscape at left-sided defence. But Araujo’s name has not disappeared from the Premier League conversation. Far from it.
World Cup stage, bigger spotlight
If the club season put him on the radar, this summer has turned up the volume.
Deployed on the left for Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay, Araujo has been one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise underwhelming campaign. He has already produced two goals and an assist, numbers that look even more impressive given the broader struggles of a Uruguay side flirting with an early exit.
Bielsa’s team face Spain knowing defeat, combined with unhelpful results elsewhere in Group H, could send them home. The pressure is immense. For Araujo, it has become a showcase.
During Uruguay’s 2-2 draw with Cape Verde last Sunday, Manchester United were not just watching on television. According to Portuguese outlet Record, the club sent representatives to the game to run the rule over the Sporting defender in person. Araujo did nothing to cool the interest.
Chelsea, too, are tracking him closely. Having sold Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid in a £52 million deal earlier this month, the London club are in the market for a like-for-like replacement on the left. Araujo’s versatility, end product and athletic profile make him an obvious candidate.
Suddenly, a player once primarily admired in Portugal has three of England’s biggest clubs hovering.
Sporting hold the cards – for now
For all the excitement in England, Sporting remain in a strong position. Araujo is tied to the club for another three years, and his contract includes a release clause set at €80m (£69.3m). That figure gives the Portuguese champions both leverage and time.
They do not have to sell. Any deal will be on their terms, or not at all.
The player, though, has left the door open. Speaking after Uruguay’s frustrating draw with Cape Verde, Araujo refused to shut down talk of a move away from Lisbon.
“I’m very happy at Sporting, but you never know what’s going to happen,” he said, carefully choosing his words while still hinting at possibilities ahead.
He also took a moment to praise club teammate Ivan Fresneda, who had travelled to Miami to watch him in action for Uruguay.
“I was happy to be able to talk to Fresneda, I’m grateful that he’s here and I love playing with him. I hope we can play together for a long time.”
Whether that “long time” unfolds in Lisbon or in the Premier League is exactly what Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are now trying to decide – and what Sporting intend to make them pay to find out.
