Manchester United to Update Kit with Premier League Badges
Manchester United will tweak their look this weekend – not for fashion, but to fall in line with Premier League rules.
When Ipswich visit Old Trafford on Sunday, United’s shirts will carry official Premier League badges on both sleeves, correcting an oversight from the opening day defeat at Hull City.
Double badges after opening-day miss
League regulations are clear. Every club must display the Premier League badge and the “No Room For Racism” element on the right sleeve. If a team does not have a commercial sponsor on the left sleeve, the same official badge must appear there as well.
United currently have no sleeve sponsor. Yet in their 2-0 loss at Hull, their new third kit carried the Prem logo only on the right arm, leaving the left sleeve blank and technically out of step with Rule M.15.
The mistake has been acknowledged by both the club and the league. SunSport understands United will not face any sanction, with the issue viewed as an administrative slip rather than a snub to the rulebook.
The fix is simple. From Sunday, United will wear the league’s iconic lion crest on both sleeves, just as Chelsea, Sunderland and Crystal Palace did on the opening weekend.
Commercial gap on the arm
The change underlines an unusual sight for United fans: bare sleeves at Old Trafford.
The club had planned to unveil a new sleeve sponsor for this season, but talks over a fresh commercial deal are still ongoing. Until that agreement is signed, the Premier League badge will occupy both arms.
United’s previous sleeve partnership, a £20million-a-year deal with DXC Technology, expired in May. Its conclusion ended an eight-year run of branded shirt sleeves at the club.
Off the pitch, the commercial machine has hardly stalled. Earlier this month, United secured a record multi-year training kit sponsorship with Betway, worth around £20m per season. On the front of the match shirt, Snapdragon have taken over as main sponsor from the start of the 2024/25 campaign.
So the shirts are still lucrative. The sleeves, for now, belong to the league.
