Chelsea’s stance hardens after missed deadline

The missed deadline has not killed the deal. Inside City, there has long been a belief that Chelsea would still sell before the window closes. The London club are prepared to sanction Fernandez’s departure if their valuation is met and they can bring in a replacement, though that successor might not mirror Fernandez’s profile or role.

Now, with the self-imposed cut-off in the past, Chelsea are expected to push for either a higher headline fee than £120 million or a more favourable payment structure than the one discussed before August 14.

Record-breaking territory

Any agreement will be huge. If the final package for Fernandez goes beyond the £125 million Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer, the 25-year-old would become the most expensive sale in English football history.

That possibility is very real. City want him, Fernandez wants City, and Chelsea know they are negotiating from a position of financial strength. The pressure around the deal is growing with every day that passes.

Fernandez caught between two worlds

Maresca sees Fernandez as a flexible, high-impact midfielder for his City project. Under the Italian at Chelsea, Fernandez often operated as an eight and even as a ten, far removed from the more disciplined six role he occupied at Benfica in Portugal.

That tactical evolution has a knock-on effect for Chelsea’s recruitment. If Fernandez goes, the club are not locked into finding a like-for-like holding midfielder. They could instead lean towards a more creative, attack-minded profile to fill the gap his departure would leave between midfield and the forward line.

Alex Scott is one name admired at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea saw a £64 million bid rejected by Bournemouth earlier in the summer and have not returned since, with no fresh contact between the clubs. Bournemouth expect Scott to stay, and as things stand, that situation is static.

The equation could change if Chelsea choose to reshape their attacking options. Should Pedro Neto leave, the club may decide to invest in a central or right-sided attacking midfielder or forward rather than a pure controller. Neto is not guaranteed to depart, but Chelsea are ready to listen to offers close to £100 million.
