Manchester United Targets Ederson as Summer Rebuild Begins
Manchester United’s summer rebuild is beginning to take shape, and the first move may not be a headline-grabber, but it could be a statement of intent.
The club are working on a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta, with talks progressing over a move that would make the Brazilian midfielder their first signing of the transfer window, according to the Manchester Evening News.
This is not the Ederson who wears gloves and plays for Manchester City. This is the Ederson who wears opponents down.
A runner to change the rhythm
United have tracked the 26-year-old since last year. His contract in Bergamo runs down in 12 months, Atalanta are prepared to sell, and United sense an opportunity.
Ederson has built his reputation in Serie A on relentless running and sheer physical presence. He can anchor play as a deep-lying midfielder, or drive from slightly higher up as a No. 8. He covers ground, he snaps into duels, he keeps the tempo high.
He is unlikely to be the name that sends social media into meltdown. Inside Carrington, though, the pursuit tells its own story. Jason Wilcox, the club’s technical director, is understood to be a firm admirer, and United’s push to get the deal done underlines how much value they place on his profile.
If negotiations keep moving in the right direction, Ederson is expected to become the first signing under Michael Carrick, who is set to take charge at Old Trafford.
Not the headline act – but part of a bigger plan
The move for Ederson is only one piece of a wider midfield overhaul. United want at least two new midfielders this summer and have already ring-fenced serious funds for a marquee addition to replace Casemiro.
Club chiefs have “earmarked significant investment” for that role, and sources stress that Ederson’s possible arrival will not change those plans. He is seen as reinforcement, not the centrepiece.
The search for that leading man in midfield has taken United’s gaze across the Premier League and into Europe.
Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson sits high on their shortlist. The 21-year-old has impressed enough to catch both Manchester clubs’ attention, but United are adamant they will not be dragged into a bidding war with City for his signature. The line is clear: value, or they walk away.
In an ideal world, the dream signing is already wearing white in Madrid. Aurélien Tchouaméni is “seen as a dream midfield signing at Old Trafford”, the kind of all-court presence who could redefine United’s core. For now, it remains just that – a dream. Real Madrid have shown no inclination to even entertain a sale.
United are also keeping tabs on Mateus Fernandes. With West Ham relegated to the Championship, a deal for the Portuguese midfielder is expected to be far more straightforward if United decide to act. The opportunity is there; the question is how he fits into a puzzle that already includes Ederson as a likely arrival.
One thing is clear: United do not want another summer of drift. If Ederson walks through the door first, he will set the tone – a hard-running, physically dominant midfielder as the opening move in a reshaped engine room. The real judgment will come when we see who follows him.
