Bardghji Suffers Second ACL Tear, Transfer Plans End

Barcelona’s summer plans took a brutal twist on Tuesday as the club confirmed that forward Bardghji has torn the ACL in his right knee, an injury that destroys any prospect of a move before the transfer window closes on September 1.

The 20-year-old Sweden international suffered the damage during training on Monday. Subsequent medical tests delivered the worst possible news: he will need surgery in the coming days and faces a long spell on the sidelines.

For Bardghji, the timing could hardly be worse. He had been preparing for a departure from the Catalan giants after talks with club management and a clear message from coach Hansi Flick about his role.

Told to find a new club, then struck down

In the days leading up to the injury, Flick had, according to ESPN, been frank with the youngster. First-team minutes would be scarce at Barcelona this season, the coach told him, and a move away would offer a better chance of regular football.

This is not Bardghji’s first battle with this particular injury. It is the second time he has torn the ACL in his right knee, having suffered the same serious problem while playing for Copenhagen in 2024.

Barcelona signed him last summer from the Danish club in a deal worth around €2 million. In his debut season in Spain, he made 28 appearances in all competitions and scored two goals, most of those minutes coming from the bench.

His path to the starting XI was already narrowing. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi this summer pushed him further down the pecking order in a crowded forward line. A transfer felt like the logical next step in his career.

Now that path has been abruptly sealed off.

Window shut, rehab ahead

With the market closing on September 1, the severity of the ACL tear effectively ends any chance of Bardghji leaving Barcelona in this window. No club will move for a player facing months of recovery from such a serious knee injury.

The plan has flipped overnight. Instead of packing for a new league and a fresh start, the 20-year-old will remain in Barcelona, undergo surgery in the coming days and then begin a long rehabilitation programme at the club.

His season will be defined not by minutes and milestones, but by recovery sessions and checkpoints. For a young winger already confronting a second major knee setback, the battle now is not for a place in Flick’s team or a transfer abroad.
