Manchester United Prepares for Premier League Season Against Leeds

Manchester United step up their preparations for the new Premier League season tonight with a familiar foe in a different setting: Leeds United at Croke Park in Dublin, their penultimate friendly of the summer.

With only two games left before the curtain-raiser at Hull City on August 22, Michael Carrick is running out of time to fine-tune his side. This stage of pre-season is no longer about experiments. It is about rhythm, minutes and building the spine that will walk out on opening day.

Carrick eyes stronger core

In goal, Senne Lammens is set for his first start of the summer after illness ruled him out of the clash with Paris Saint-Germain. His return offers Carrick a chance to look at a goalkeeper who has had a stop-start pre-season so far.

At right-back, Noussair Mazraoui began the game against PSG, but Diogo Dalot is pushing hard for more minutes and could get the nod in Dublin. The centre-back pairing is also under the microscope. Ayden Heaven struggled on Saturday, and with Leny Yoro available to partner Harry Maguire, a change at the heart of defence would make sense as standards tighten.

Midfield puzzle after Mount scare

The midfield has been one of United’s brighter stories this summer. Andrey Santos and Mason Mount have quickly formed a sharp partnership, giving Carrick control and energy in the middle of the pitch.

But that plan took a jolt in Gothenburg. Mount was withdrawn midway through the first half, raising immediate concerns. Both the former Chelsea midfielder and Carrick stressed the move was purely precautionary, yet the risk of pushing him too soon is obvious. That opens the door for Youri Tielemans to make his first start alongside Santos, a combination that would give United a different type of guile and passing range.

Ahead of them, Bruno Fernandes is ready to step properly into pre-season. The captain got his first minutes at the weekend and is expected to start in the No.10 role, taking over from Shea Lacey. The teenager has impressed and this should not be the end of his involvement; the expectation inside the club is that Lacey will feature more regularly with the first team as the season unfolds.

Rashford back, but not from the cold

Marcus Rashford has rejoined the squad in Dublin, a significant development given the uncertainty around his future. He has been reintegrated into the group this week, but a starting place tonight looks unlikely as Carrick manages his return carefully.

The same applies to Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, both back from World Cup duty. Their quality is not in doubt, but with limited training time behind them, this stage is about building fitness rather than throwing them straight into a starting XI.

Wide battles and illness concerns

On the right flank, Amad has done exactly what any manager wants at this point in pre-season: he has taken his chance. His display on Saturday was lively and effective, and he should have done enough to keep his place.

The left side is less settled. Patrick Dorgu has been learning the role and Carrick may stick with him to accelerate that education. But there is another option. If Matheus Cunha has fully shaken off the illness that sidelined him at the weekend, he could come straight into the side and offer a more direct threat from that wing.

Mbeumo makes his case up front

Up front, Carrick’s ideal scenario is clear. He would love to start Benjamin Sesko. The problem is just as clear: Sesko has not played since the win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last season. Throwing him in now would be a gamble with the competitive season so close.

That leaves Bryan Mbeumo as the obvious solution. He has been one of United’s standout performers in pre-season, sharp and influential whenever he has led the line. Starting him as the central striker feels almost automatic at this point, at least until Sesko reaches full fitness.

A rivalry, a packed Croke Park and a manager edging towards his first-choice XI. With Hull on the horizon, nights like this will decide who walks out in that Premier League opener — and who is left chasing from behind.
