Manchester United Target Mateus Fernandes Amidst Competitive Bidding
Manchester United have drawn a hard line in this summer’s market. Elliot Anderson will not be the £120million marquee, and Nottingham Forest’s price has been left on the table. The money, and the attention, are moving elsewhere.
All roads now point to Mateus Fernandes.
United pivot to West Ham’s prized asset
With West Ham United relegated to the Championship, their best players were always likely to become targets. Fernandes, a 21-year-old Portugal international, has quickly moved from name on a list to headline priority at Old Trafford.
Tyrone Marshall, Chief Manchester United correspondent for the Manchester Evening News, set the tone early on June 11. Posting on X at 7:59am, he revealed United’s stance on Anderson and the new direction of their recruitment drive:
“Manchester United unwilling to pay £120million for Elliot Anderson and won’t be drawn into a bidding war.
“They want players who want to join them and, as it stands, they are focusing on other targets, with Mateus Fernandes at the top of the list #mufc”
The message was clear. No auction. No overpaying. A new midfield anchor, yes – but on United’s terms.
Romano: “Official contact” and a bid in the works
From there, the noise around Fernandes intensified. Fabrizio Romano, who has been tracking the situation closely, confirmed that talks have already moved beyond idle interest.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “Manchester United are in official contact with the agent of the player.
“Manchester United already started the conversation with the agent to start preparing a bid to West Ham, so Man Utd are for sure in conversations with Mateus Fernandes.
“So, we have to take this into consideration and then see how other clubs will react because there are more clubs, not only Man Utd, not only Real Madrid, so it’s going to be an interesting race surely.”
The pressure is now on United’s recruitment team to turn that contact into a concrete offer. The framework is being prepared; the negotiation with West Ham is the next step.
A crowded race for a rising midfielder
United are not alone in this chase. TalkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs has underlined just how crowded the field has become.
Posting on X at 3:43pm on June 11, Jacobs wrote: “Movement expected on Mateus Fernandes’ future this month.
“Manchester United already in talks on the player side.
“PSG and Arsenal also hold appreciation.
“Real Madrid the latest suitor to make contact.
“West Ham want double the £38m+£4m they paid, but despite this valuation as sale is expected.”
Romano had already reported earlier this month that West Ham fixed Fernandes’s price at £85m in a meeting with the player’s camp. On June 8, at 7:04pm, he posted: “Understand Matheus Fernandes price tag has been fixed by West Ham in a meeting with his camp: £85m.
“Manchester United in contact with player side, more clubs also attentive and keen.”
West Ham’s stance is unapologetic: they want roughly double the £38m plus £4m they originally paid. Relegation has not forced a fire sale. If anything, it has stiffened their resolve to cash in properly on one of their most valuable assets.
United’s midfield rebuild takes shape
Inside Old Trafford, the plan is broader than one signing. TEAMtalk reported on May 14 that Fernandes is “extremely keen” on a move to Manchester United, with the club already having a deal in place with Atalanta for Ederson Silva.
That detail matters. It hints at a deeper reconstruction of the midfield – a unit that has long relied on moments of brilliance rather than sustained control.
Fernandes, for his part, is said to be attracted by the idea of lining up alongside his Portugal international teammate Bruno Fernandes. The prospect of a Portuguese core driving United’s midfield is an alluring one for the club and, clearly, for the player himself.
The race is now set: United in “official contact”, West Ham holding firm at £85m, and heavyweights like Real Madrid, PSG and Arsenal circling.
If Manchester United truly want Mateus Fernandes at the heart of their new era, this is where they prove it – with a bid that cuts through the noise and tests just how serious West Ham are about that price tag.
