Manchester United Signs Young Goalkeeper Kit Margetson

Manchester United have added another young goalkeeper to their ranks, confirming the capture of Kit Margetson from Swansea City while pushing on with plans to reinforce their midfield.

Margetson, 19, arrives at Old Trafford after his contract with Swansea expired, with United agreeing a compensation package to reward the Championship club for nurturing him from Under-15 level through to the senior setup.

The Wales Under-21 international is steeped in goalkeeping pedigree. He is the son of Martyn Margetson, the former England and Swansea goalkeeper who now works as Wales’ goalkeeping coach. Last season, the teenager stepped out of academy football and into the uncompromising world of senior competition with Connah’s Quay Nomads in the Cymru Premier.

He did not merely gain experience. He delivered.

Margetson kept 10 clean sheets in 34 appearances for Connah’s Quay, playing a central role in their push to European qualification. That form accelerated his international progress too, culminating in an Under-21 debut for Wales against Belarus in March.

United announced the deal with a statement confirming the signing is subject to registration and underlining his trajectory from Swansea’s youth ranks to regular senior football in Wales’ top flight. Swansea echoed that narrative, stressing both his development at the club since Under-15 level and his involvement with their senior squad, which included a place in the first-team matchday group for a fixture against Millwall towards the end of the 2024-25 season.

The Welsh club also underlined their right to remuneration for his development and offered their blessing, wishing him success at Old Trafford.

Margetson becomes the second Welsh goalkeeper to join United this summer, following the arrival of Karl Darlow on a free transfer after his departure from Leeds. The reshaping of United’s goalkeeping department is gathering pace, with competition and succession planning clearly at the heart of the strategy.

Midfield rebuild targets Manu Kone

Behind the scenes, the recruitment drive is not stopping at the back line.

United have already moved decisively in midfield, bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans as part of a broader rebuild in the centre of the pitch. The club now appear intent on adding a third option to that mix.

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, United have reached an agreement in principle on personal terms with Roma midfielder Manu Kone, who caught the eye with France at the World Cup. The report claims United are prepared to table an offer close to €50 million (around £42.7 million) for the 23-year-old.

The path to his signature, though, is far from clear. Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Saudi side Al-Ahli are all cited as rivals in the chase, setting up a multi-club battle for one of Europe’s most coveted midfielders.

For now, United can point to tangible progress: a fresh, ambitious goalkeeper added to the ranks and a midfield rebuild already under way. The question is how far they are prepared to go to turn interest in Kone into another completed deal.
