Liverpool Rejects £30m Bid for Trey Nyoni as Iraola Trusts in Young Talent

Liverpool have turned their back on a £30million move for Trey Nyoni and, in doing so, sent a loud message about where they see the teenager’s future.

Nottingham Forest came in hard: £25m guaranteed, another £5m in add-ons, a package that would usually make a 19-year-old with 21 senior appearances a very sellable asset. Liverpool didn’t blink. The answer was no — and not a negotiating “maybe later” either. The club made it clear there would be no deal before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

This isn’t a casual stance. Andoni Iraola is building his first Liverpool season with Nyoni right in the middle of it.

The 19-year-old England youth international impressed the new head coach throughout pre-season, not just in the friendlies but in the daily grind at the training ground. Iraola has seen enough.

“I’m very happy with Trey,” he said before the campaign began. “He has been very good in pre-season, not only in the games, even when he trains with us he’s facing top-level players and he’s at the level. I have no doubts with Trey. He will be very valuable this season for us, hopefully plays a lot and gives the level that I’m seeing every day in training.”

That belief has already shaped Liverpool’s summer. When Curtis Jones left for Inter in a £30m deal earlier this month, the club chose not to bring in a like-for-like replacement. Internally, the calculation was simple: Nyoni is ready for a much bigger role now.

The club’s contract decisions back that up. He signed a new long-term deal last summer, and Liverpool are already expected to open talks over another extension after a year of rapid progress.

Nyoni arrived from Leicester City’s academy three years ago, a quiet move at the time that now looks shrewd. Since then he has clocked 21 appearances, gradually edging from prospect to genuine option. His latest cameo came on Saturday, off the bench in the 2-2 draw with Forest at Anfield, where he caught the eye again and, ironically, reminded his suitors exactly why they want him.

Forest tested Liverpool’s resolve straight after. The response underlined the shift: Nyoni is no longer just one for tomorrow. He is part of the plan now.

With the deadline looming and the market swirling, Liverpool have drawn a line. Nyoni stays, Iraola trusts him, and a £30m bid is not enough to change that. The next question is no longer who will buy him — it’s how big a role he can seize in a Liverpool midfield that has just been cleared to make room for him.
