Manchester United's Pre-Season Challenges: Injuries and New Signings

The World Cup has finally loosened its grip on Manchester United’s pre-season plans.

A new midfielder, delayed by Belgium’s run to the quarter-finals, is at last ready to pull on a United shirt and hand Michael Carrick another option in the middle of the pitch. His first minutes for the club have been a long time coming; now the wait is over.

Others are not so fortunate.

The 21-day mandatory post-tournament break still rules out England trio Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, along with Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez. All three remain sidelined as United continue their summer schedule without some of their biggest names. Benjamin Sesko is absent too, still dealing with the shin injury that cut short his season last term and has yet to fully clear.

The absences do not stop there. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens and forward Matheus Cunha are missing from the squad, with United confirming both are recovering from minor, unrelated illnesses. Cunha only returned to training this week after his World Cup efforts with Brazil, and the club will not rush him. The pair are expected to rejoin the group at next week’s training camp in the Republic of Ireland, where a historic meeting with old rivals Leeds at Dublin’s Croke Park on Wednesday night awaits.

Current Squad Situation

For now, Carrick works with what he has.

He has named a 22-man travelling squad for Friday’s clash with PSG, with captain Bruno Fernandes back at the heart of it and once again the face of this evolving side. Defenders Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are also included; Mazraoui is the only one of that trio to start, underlining Carrick’s desire to carefully manage minutes and workloads as the season edges closer.

Up front, Bryan Mbeumo keeps his place as the spearhead of the attack. He earned it. His two goals in the 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid in Stockholm last weekend pushed him to the front of the queue, and Carrick has rewarded that form.

The romance of youth takes a pause. Fifteen-year-old JJ Gabriel, who made his senior debut in that same game, drops out of the squad, as does fellow youngster Jim Thwaites. Both enjoyed a taste of the big stage in Sweden; both now step back as United tighten the group for a higher-profile test.

Goalkeeping Situation

The goalkeeping situation is even more stripped back.

Altay Bayindir is not involved after sealing a loan move to Celta Vigo on Friday, leaving United short of experienced cover between the posts. With Lammens unavailable and new signing Karl Darlow still recovering from minor surgery carried out during his time at Leeds late last season, Carrick’s options are thin.

Radek Vitek’s permanent move to Middlesbrough, in a deal worth up to £14million, has further reshaped the depth chart. That leaves 40-year-old Tom Heaton to start again, supported only by Dermot Mee and teenager Fred Heath on the bench. It is a stark picture: a veteran starter, a pair of understudies, and little margin for error.

Injury List

The injury list in other areas is no less significant. Midfielder Manuel Ugarte faces months out after knee surgery in July, the result of a serious injury suffered at the World Cup with Uruguay. At the back, Matthijs de Ligt is still not ready to return from a long-term back problem, his comeback pushed further down the road.

So United head into PSG with a captain restored, a new Belgian midfielder finally ready, and a squad patched together around World Cup fatigue, minor illnesses, and long-term injuries.

This is not a full-strength Manchester United. It is a work in progress, tested early, learning to live with gaps. How quickly Carrick can turn this uneven pre-season into a coherent, hardened side will shape far more than a summer night against PSG.
