Arsenal Pursue Julián Álvarez Despite Player's Barcelona Dream
Arsenal refuse to give up on Julián Álvarez – even as the player dreams of Barcelona.
The Premier League champions have tracked the Atlético Madrid forward all summer, pushing hard to bring him back to England. Álvarez, though, has been clear about his ideal destination: he wants La Liga, and he wants Barça.
England calling as Atlético push Arsenal option
In Spain, the story is shifting. Reports now suggest the move to north London is far from dead. Sport claim Álvarez’s future “will be decided in the coming hours” and that “all signs point to England,” with Atlético said to be actively steering the 26-year-old towards N5 rather than a direct rival.
Álvarez has already set the tone for this window. Earlier in the summer he admitted, “the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream.” Real Madrid tested Atlético’s resolve with a reported £129 million bid, only to be rebuffed by their city rivals.
Since then, Mikel Arteta has gone personal. The Arsenal manager has phoned Álvarez himself, trying to sell the project, the role, the chance to lead the line for the champions. Yet the sense from those close to the player is that his heart is fixed on Barcelona and a return to Spanish football, not another spell in the Premier League after his time at Manchester City.
High-stakes talks in London
The plot thickens in London. Atlético sporting director Mateu Alemany is in the capital to negotiate for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson. That trip could double up. Sport Witness report that Álvarez’s name is also on the agenda, with Arsenal positioned as a serious option while Alemany is in town.
Arsenal are tangled in several strands of the forward market. Viktor Gyökeres has been linked to Barcelona, while Gabriel Jesus is also said to feature on the Catalan club’s shortlist. Those moving parts could drag the Álvarez saga in several directions over the final days of the window.
Inside Arsenal, there is a calm edge to the chaos. FourFourTwo understand Arteta is prepared for the possibility that no new forward arrives at all this summer, even with so many attacking names circulating around the club.
Big offer on the table
The numbers underline how serious Arsenal are. Sport Witness relay claims from Spain that the Gunners have put forward an offer of “€80m plus Viktor Gyökeres” for Álvarez. On top of that, the Argentine is said to be able to double his salary at the Emirates and take on a central role under Arteta.
For Arsenal, Álvarez would be a tactical weapon as much as a marquee signing. He could step in on the left wing as a direct replacement if Gabriel Martinelli were to depart, or operate through the middle as an alternative to Kai Havertz. His versatility makes him a fit for several scenarios, depending on who leaves London Colney in the coming weeks.
Moving pieces around Arsenal’s attack
Around him, the rest of Arsenal’s attacking picture continues to shift. Martinelli has reportedly turned down an offer from Galatasaray, while Victor Osimhen is said to be attracting interest from the Emirates hierarchy.
Some doors have already closed. Arsenal are not in the race for Bradley Barcola. Attempts to lure Vinícius Jr and Morgan Rogers have failed: Vinícius chose to extend his contract in Madrid, and Rogers has joined Chelsea in a British record transfer.
So the window narrows. A player who wants Barcelona. A club in Atlético pushing him towards Arsenal. A manager in Arteta willing to wait, but ready to strike.
If Julián Álvarez does walk out at the Emirates before the deadline, it will be because Arsenal refused to accept his dream and quietly set about changing it.
