Manchester United Pursue Manu Kone After Tchouameni Decision
Manchester United’s ideal Casemiro successor has slipped away. The search has not.
Aurelien Tchouameni, long viewed at Old Trafford as the dream signing to anchor their midfield for the next decade, has chosen to stay exactly where he is. Real Madrid’s French powerhouse has agreed a new contract with the Spanish giants after talks with Jose Mourinho, who is set for a sensational return to the Bernabeu 13 years after his first spell in charge.
United had allowed themselves to believe the door might open. Inside the club, there was growing confidence that Madrid would consider cashing in on Tchouameni to bankroll another huge midfield purchase, with names like Rodri and Enzo Fernandez heavily linked to the European champions. Instead, Mourinho made his stance clear, Madrid moved, and Tchouameni committed his long-term future to the Spanish capital.
For United, it is a major setback. Tchouameni had already replaced Casemiro in Madrid’s engine room back in 2022. The idea of repeating that succession plan in Manchester was neat, logical, and hugely appealing.
The twist in the story lies with the man who represents him. Tchouameni’s agent also looks after Manu Kone, and there is a growing sense that United’s interest in the Madrid midfielder helped sharpen negotiations on his new deal. Even so, well-placed sources maintain that a transfer for Tchouameni was not pure fantasy; it might have happened if Madrid had been prepared to sell.
They weren’t. So United have turned to the other French midfielder on that client list.
Kone moves to the forefront
Manu Kone, currently at Roma, has shifted from long-term name on a scouting report to active target. According to TEAMtalk, United are now “plotting a move” for the 25-year-old after being made aware of Roma’s valuation: around £50 million.
Roma’s situation has opened a window. A third-placed finish in Serie A has secured Champions League football, but it has not eased the financial pressure. The club still need to raise significant funds to stay on the right side of UEFA’s financial regulations, and internally Kone is viewed as their most valuable saleable asset.
Intermediaries have already been busy. Manchester United are not alone in being sounded out; Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been contacted as potential landing spots for the Frenchman. The Premier League, clearly, is the preferred marketplace.
For Kone, that suits just fine. Reports have consistently painted a picture of a player eager to test himself in England, with previous claims suggesting he is “very keen” on becoming a United player in particular. His profile reads like a tailor-made fit for the league: a 6'1" midfielder who relishes physical duels, carries the ball aggressively through the lines and has the athleticism to cover huge areas of the pitch.
That blend of power and poise has not gone unnoticed. A strong World Cup campaign enhanced his reputation, with Kone showcasing the energy and technical quality that have drawn admirers from across Europe.
Deschamps’ blueprint, INEOS’ logic
One moment in Qatar resonates strongly at Old Trafford. In France’s 3-0 group-stage win over Iraq, Kone started in place of the injured Tchouameni, who had been ruled out with an adductor problem. Didier Deschamps turned to Kone as the natural replacement at the base of midfield.
United’s recruitment team have taken note. If Deschamps sees Kone as a viable stand-in for Tchouameni, the logic goes, then he can be viewed in the same light in Manchester’s succession plan for Casemiro.
The parallels are hard to ignore: both French, both trusted on the international stage, both represented by the same agent. When INEOS sat down for recent discussions, it is understood that Kone’s situation at Roma featured prominently, with the agent’s dual role smoothing the flow of information.
TEAMtalk even reports that INEOS have been made aware of another Real Madrid midfielder’s potential availability: Eduardo Camavinga. On paper, that is the kind of name to send any sporting director scrambling for a calculator. Yet the preference, at this stage, is said to be clear. Kone is seen as the “serious option” to reinforce Michael Carrick’s midfield.
United’s hierarchy know they cannot afford to misstep in this area of the pitch again. Casemiro’s influence has waned, the balance of the midfield has often looked fragile, and the Premier League demands a level of intensity and athleticism that Kone appears built for.
The dream of Tchouameni in red has gone. The question now is whether United move decisively enough to ensure Manu Kone does not slip through their fingers in the same way.
