Manchester United Targets Lewis Hall Amid World Cup Frustration

Manchester United’s pursuit of Lewis Hall has moved up a gear, with the Newcastle United full-back increasingly open to an Old Trafford switch amid frustration over his England World Cup snub.

United have identified Hall as their preferred solution on the left side of defence and are readying a “concerted push” to land the 21-year-old, who Newcastle value at around £60million, according to TEAMtalk.

United turn to Hall after Brown blow

United had been in discussions over a move for Nathaniel Brown, but with the Germany international closing in on Bayern Munich, attention inside Old Trafford has shifted decisively towards Hall.

Club sources are said to be confident that Hall is interested in joining, viewing a move to United as a major step in his career. The chance to return to Champions League football, which he sampled with Newcastle this season, is understood to be a key part of the attraction.

There is now “growing belief” within United that Hall would be willing to make the move, and plans are being drawn up to intensify talks over the coming weeks.

World Cup omission stokes frustration

The timing of that push is no accident. Reports from The Sun say Hall has been left “frustrated” after missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad, a decision he feels was influenced by how he was used at Newcastle this season.

Hall spent large spells covering at right-back for the injured Tino Livramento, rather than playing in his natural role on the left. He started at right-back in the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest, the penultimate game before Tuchel named his 26-man squad, and was withdrawn at half-time in the 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth in April. He then began the following matches against Arsenal and Brighton on the bench.

Those details matter to the player. The report claims Hall believes being shifted out of position, and then losing his place in the side, contributed to his omission from the Three Lions squad.

Livramento, whose injury issues forced Hall to the opposite flank, has been included in Tuchel’s squad. Djed Spence has also travelled as cover for starting left-back Nico O’Reilly, despite being naturally right-footed. Hall, meanwhile, will be watching from home.

For a young defender who has already shown he can handle Champions League nights, that stings. United, sensing an opportunity, are ready to test Newcastle’s resolve.

Newcastle deny rift with Howe

Talk of frustration has inevitably sparked speculation of a breakdown in Hall’s relationship with Eddie Howe, but Newcastle have moved quickly to shut that down.

The club insist there has been no falling out between manager and player, a position backed up by The Telegraph’s Northern Football correspondent Luke Edwards. Writing on X, Edwards stressed that Hall remains “extremely grateful” for the work Howe has done with him at St James’ Park, crediting that development with helping him become an England international in the first place.

Edwards also pointed out that Hall and Howe share the same agent, a detail that underlines Newcastle’s stance. If Hall had formally pushed to leave, Howe’s camp would already know.

For now, the message from Tyneside is clear: no bust-up, no rebellion, no public transfer request.

But there is another reality running alongside that. A 21-year-old full-back, valued at £60million, disappointed by a World Cup omission he feels was shaped by how he was used, and a club of United’s size and profile preparing a major move.

Newcastle have turned Hall into a senior international and a serious Premier League asset. Manchester United now want to turn him into the cornerstone of their next back line. Which vision wins out will define one of this window’s most intriguing defensive sagas.
