What was supposed to be a straightforward £35m deal for the Atalanta midfielder, agreed on 2 June, is now shrouded in uncertainty, conflicting briefings and growing anxiety around Old Trafford.

A Simple Plan, Complicated Fast

United’s blueprint was clear. Get Ederson in early, medical done at the start of July, paperwork wrapped before pre-season, and hand Erik ten Hag a key midfield addition ahead of a Champions League return.

Then came the late twist.

Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to call the 27-year-old into Brazil’s World Cup squad forced United to rip up the schedule. The medical was pushed back, with the club expecting to complete the process once Brazil’s tournament ended. Privately, United figures were still calm when whispers emerged last weekend that the transfer had collapsed. The message then: the deal was delayed, not dead.

Brazil’s subsequent elimination by Norway should have cleared the way. It didn’t.

While Chelsea’s Andrey Santos and former Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow have both moved towards completing their own transfers to United in the past 48 hours, there has been silence on Ederson. No unveiling. No travel. No clarity.

Conflicting Messages and a Growing Mystery

Behind the scenes, the picture is murky.

Sources have indicated that medical tests flagged an issue, with one telling BBC Sport the deal is off. That line, on its own, would normally spell the end of the chase.

Yet both clubs are pushing back. Figures at Manchester United and Atalanta insist no final decision has been made on the transfer. Ederson is thought to remain in the United States, his future hanging in the balance while the two clubs publicly hold the line.

For supporters, it leaves a familiar feeling: limbo. A deal announced in principle, a player identified as central to the summer rebuild, now drifting in uncertainty with the new season approaching.

A Midfield Rebuild Stalling

This is not an isolated misstep. It is the latest in a sequence of frustrations.

After finishing third last season and securing a long-awaited return to the Champions League after two years away, United made midfield their top priority. The idea was to land a first-choice signing early, build around him, and avoid the frantic late-window scramble that has so often defined their recent summers.

Elliot Anderson was the preferred option. Nottingham Forest’s England midfielder quickly became too expensive as his fee soared to £116m. United walked away, unwilling to be dragged into a bidding war at that level.

Attention switched to Mateus Fernandes at West Ham. Initially, the situation looked more favourable. A change of leadership at the London club, though, eased their need to sell quickly. Then Tottenham entered the race. The dynamic changed instantly.

United believed the final price would be significantly lower than the £85m West Ham eventually set. They did match that figure, but their proposal leaned on additional payments and structure. Tottenham’s approach proved more convincing, and Fernandes chose Spurs.

By that stage, United were working on the assumption that Ederson was effectively in the bag. On paper, at least, one major midfield reinforcement was secured, with Santos and Darlow to follow as this week’s business.

Now even that assumption is under threat.

A Summer on Edge

If the Ederson move collapses, it will underline just how fraught this window has become for United.

The club entered the summer with Champions League football restored, a clear positional need identified, and a shortlist of targets. Anderson priced out. Fernandes lost to a rival. Ederson agreed, then delayed, now in doubt.

The recruitment plan is not broken, but it is badly bruised. Each missed target increases the pressure on the next deal. Each delay tightens the timeline before the season starts.

For now, United and Atalanta maintain that no final call has been made. The door, officially, is still open.

But as fans wait for a definitive answer on Ederson, the question grows louder: how many more setbacks can this summer take before it starts to shape the season to come?
