Manchester United Closing in on Ederson Transfer

Manchester United are closing in on their first major midfield signing of the summer, with Atalanta’s Ederson now on the brink of a move to Old Trafford.

The club’s return to the Champions League has sharpened the urgency. Three years away from Europe’s top table is a long exile for United, and the memory of their last group-stage exit in the old format still stings. This time, they want to arrive armed, not hopeful.

Ederson Deal Nears the Line

INEOS have made central midfield the first battleground of this window, and Ederson is at the front of the queue.

Reports in England this week claimed United had already struck a £38 million agreement with Atalanta. The reality is slightly different, but not by much. According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal with the player is already done and dusted: Ederson has said yes, the contract is prepared, and it runs for five years.

The Brazilian has had other suitors. They tried to muscle in late. He has made his stance plain.

Romano reports that Ederson is effectively waiting for United to finish the job, with a fee of around €45 million on the table. The final details are down to structure: payment terms, instalments, the usual arm-wrestling over how and when the money lands in Bergamo.

United’s internal green light is the last piece. The club have worked on this move for weeks, treating Ederson as one of several priority targets in a remodelled midfield. The pressure is now on the hierarchy to push the button.

If they do, they will land a 26-year-old who has been described as “world-class” in Italy, a player hardened by Serie A’s tactical grind and Atalanta’s high-intensity demands. For a squad about to juggle Premier League, Champions League and domestic cups, that profile matters.

One Piece of a Bigger Midfield Puzzle

Ederson alone will not solve United’s midfield equation. Inside the club, there is recognition that the position needs more than one new face, especially with a long-term successor to Casemiro still to be found.

That search has thrown up some heavyweight names.

Sandro Tonali has surged towards the top of the list. Reports from Italy suggest Michael Carrick pushed for the Newcastle United midfielder even before the Ederson move advanced, such is his admiration for the Italy international. A separate Italian report now claims United are also closing in on an agreement for the 26-year-old, who has emerged as a leading target for the summer.

Above all of them sits a dream: Aurelien Tchouameni. Romano has confirmed that the Real Madrid midfielder is viewed inside United as the ideal signing, the kind of anchor who could redefine their core for years. Whether Madrid are prepared to part with him is another matter, especially after his high-profile clash with Federico Valverde, a teammate who has also been mentioned in connection with United.

The list does not end there. According to GIVEMESPORT sources, Carrick’s number one target is Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, but the England midfielder is currently leaning towards a move to Manchester City. That tug of war, if it develops, will say plenty about where United stand in the market.

West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes is another name in the frame. With the London club dropping into the Championship, the 26-year-old looks set to move on, and United have been tracking his situation as they weigh up multiple options for depth and competition.

A Midfield Rebuild With Champions League Stakes

United’s third-place finish last season, behind Manchester City and Arsenal, offered a platform. It also exposed the gaps. With the Champions League back on the calendar and fixture congestion guaranteed, the squad cannot afford to creak in the middle of the pitch.

Ederson, if and when the final approval lands, will be a significant first step. But the way United navigate the rest of this midfield rebuild — from Tonali and Tchouameni to the likes of Anderson and Fernandes — will decide whether they simply return to Europe, or arrive ready to stay there.
