Chelsea Signs Chavarria and Sets Firm Price for Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea’s summer plan under Xabi Alonso took a clear step forward on Wednesday – and slammed into a wall at the same time.

On one side, the club finally sealed their solution at left wing-back. On the other, they sent Manchester City a blunt message over Enzo Fernandez: pay up, or walk away.

Chavarria arrives to fill Cucurella void

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano, a move designed squarely with Alonso’s tactical blueprint in mind.

With Alonso expected to lean heavily on a back five and aggressive wing-backs, the squad already had Marco Palestra pencilled in on the right. The left, though, was ripped open when Marc Cucurella left for Real Madrid. Chavarria, 28, has been brought in to close that gap and give Chelsea an attack-minded option down that side.

A deal worth €19m plus €2m in add-ons was agreed between the clubs, with Chavarria signing a long-term contract through to 2031. Chelsea announced the move in a statement, confirming the Spaniard will join up with his new teammates at Cobham as preparations ramp up for the 2026/27 campaign.

It’s a classic Chelsea move under the new regime: a specialist profile, tied down for the long haul, plugged into a very specific role in Alonso’s system.

Enzo and City: interest, tension and a firm price

While Chavarria settles in, the real noise around Stamford Bridge sits in midfield.

Enzo Fernandez’s future remains the saga of the summer in west London. Chelsea are open to a sale, but only on their terms. The number is clear: £120m. No discount, no creative add-ons to massage the headline fee.

Reports have suggested that figure might soften once the new season kicks off, with Ben Jacobs indicating Chelsea could become more flexible between the opening weekend and the close of the window. He noted that Chelsea want their first-team squad largely settled by their Premier League opener against Fulham on 24 August, hinting at a narrow window for any serious movement.

City, meanwhile, are circling. They are already pushing ahead with a deal for Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille and, with Rodri destined for Barcelona, they want another marquee midfielder. Enzo fits that bill perfectly for Enzo Maresca.

The new City manager is a huge admirer of Fernandez from their time together at Chelsea. According to Fabrizio Romano, Maresca has been championing the Argentine internally for months, even before Rodri’s post-World Cup situation escalated.

Romano revealed that recent contacts have taken place between Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore, and City. The message from the Etihad was simple: they like Enzo, and Maresca likes him even more.

Chelsea dig in: ‘take it or leave it’

Romano has been emphatic that Chelsea have no intention of lowering their £120m asking price. Not now, not later in the window. The stance is described as “take it or leave it”, with the fee expected to be a fixed sum rather than a package built on add-ons.

Chelsea, he says, feel “very relaxed” about the situation. Internally, the club are “more than happy” to keep Fernandez and believe he can thrive under Alonso, who views him as a key piece in midfield. The problems of last season, in Chelsea’s eyes, lay more in the wider environment and the dressing-room dynamic than in the player himself.

That belief shapes everything. Chelsea think Enzo can still become a dominant figure at Stamford Bridge, and they are not prepared to be bounced into a late-window scramble.

City, for their part, are not expected to go to £120m. They hope room for negotiation might open up, especially if Chelsea’s need to finalise their squad intensifies as the deadline approaches. But for now, that door looks firmly shut.

There is another layer: politics. Tension between the clubs over Maresca’s move from Chelsea to City earlier this year still lingers. Romano has underlined that Chelsea will not make this easy for City and want to be fully satisfied with any fee if they are to lose a player of Fernandez’s calibre to the Etihad.

Chelsea’s position is stark. The price stays at £120m. The decision comes soon. And if City won’t meet that demand in the coming days, Enzo Fernandez will start the new season in blue, not sky blue – with Alonso backing him to finally show why Chelsea paid so much to bring him to Stamford Bridge in the first place.
