Manchester United have started preliminary talks with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract, a clear signal that the club have no intention of letting their captain’s future drift into uncertainty.

After a summer thick with speculation about a possible exit, United are determined to secure the long-term commitment of the Portuguese playmaker and shut down the noise around him leaving the Premier League.

United play for time – and leverage

As part of their strategy, United plan to trigger the one-year extension clause in Fernandes’ current deal, originally signed after his move from Sporting CP. It is a classic Old Trafford power play: extend the contract, protect the asset, control the market.

Fernandes has around 10 months left on his existing £220,000-a-week agreement, but the club hold an option to push that to 2026. Even with that safety net, the hierarchy want a fresh, formal deal wrapped up before the end of the calendar year. He has spoken often about the demands at Old Trafford and the standards required to wear the armband. His performances continue to match that rhetoric.

Galatasaray and Saudi money lurking

Galatasaray have emerged as a major threat this summer, with reports of a four-year offer on the table that would effectively double Fernandes’ current salary. The Turkish side are understood to be ready to back that up with a £3.5m signing-on fee, a package designed to tempt a player entering what could be the final decade of his elite career.

The Istanbul proposal comes on the back of last summer’s heavy flirtation with the Saudi Pro League. Back then, Fernandes’ agent, Miguel Pinho, held high-level talks in Riyadh with Al-Hilal, who were prepared to put down an extraordinary £200m over three years to land the midfielder.

That move never materialised, but it served as a warning. Europe and beyond know Fernandes’ worth. United cannot afford to be complacent.
