Matteo Guendouzi Faces Four-Match Ban for Post-Match Brawl

Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has been hit with a four-match ban in European competition – though half of that is suspended – and a €50,000 (£43,000) fine for his role in the ugly scenes that followed the club’s Champions League play-off win at Lyon.

The post-match brawl erupted after Fenerbahce’s 3-2 aggregate victory sealed their place in the league stage. Uefa’s disciplinary body came down hard on the Frenchman, citing him for “insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and for violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.

Two of Guendouzi’s four games are suspended, leaving him facing an immediate two-match absence in European competition, with the remaining fixtures hanging over him during a one-year probationary period.

Mason Greenwood, Fenerbahce’s English striker, has also been sanctioned. He received a one-match suspended ban, likewise under a one-year probation, and a €30,000 (£26,000) fine for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”. The forward, who joined from Marseille in the summer – a move that already carried extra spice given Lyon’s rivalry with the French club – now starts his European campaign under close scrutiny.

Lyon did not escape unscathed. Goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira was handed the heaviest touchline punishment: a five-match ban, with two of those games suspended. Uefa described his actions in the clashes as a “serious assault”, a phrase that underlines the severity with which the governing body viewed his conduct.

The fallout did not stop with individuals. Both clubs were fined €50,000 after Uefa ruled that each team had “violated the general and basic rules of conduct”.

The tie is over. The repercussions will linger well into the European season.
