Manchester City Nears Agreement for Enzo Fernandez as Deadline Approaches

Manchester City have struck an initial agreement with Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez, pushing a dramatic late-window move to the brink just hours before the market shuts.

City only opened direct talks with Chelsea on Monday, according to British outlet The Sun, but negotiations accelerated quickly once contact was made over the 25-year-old midfielder. Now the deal is in its decisive phase, with the clock doing as much talking as the clubs.

The World Cup winner is racing the deadline. All paperwork and formalities must be wrapped up before the window slams shut at 11pm local time today if he is to swap London for Manchester.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has confirmed that an initial agreement is in place between the clubs. Fernandez is effectively on standby, waiting for the final green light to travel for a medical and complete the switch.

A reunion is at the heart of this move. Fernandez is poised to link up again with Enzo Maresca, the coach he publicly backed when Chelsea dismissed him last season. Maresca, who replaced Pep Guardiola at the Etihad in the summer, is now shaping his own City squad and has clearly pushed hard for a player he trusts.

Chelsea’s stance has been one of silence and omission. Fernandez was left out of the squad for Sunday’s match against Brighton, a decision that only intensified speculation around his future. Manager Xabi Alonso chose his words carefully when pressed on whether the Argentine had already played his last game for the club.

“We’ll see. We want what’s best for the team, which is why we made the decision against Luton and today, and anything that happens before Tuesday evening, we need to be aware of how things will develop,” Alonso said.

The Spaniard underlined that Chelsea are braced for late movement in the market.

“We’re not sure, we’re preparing for all scenarios, but I’m certain that whatever happens from Wednesday, we’ll have a good enough squad to compete in all the Premier League matches,” he added.

For Fernandez, this potential move carries an extra emotional layer. Back in January, he openly criticised the Chelsea hierarchy after Maresca was sacked, making no secret of his frustration.

“I don’t understand it,” he told Mexican network TUDN. “Sometimes there are things we don’t understand as players, and how and in what way they try to manage matters.”

The midfielder spoke of how Maresca’s dismissal cut into the core of the team’s work.

“Clearly it was a departure that hurt us a lot, especially in the middle of the season, as it cuts everything off suddenly,” he said.

“We had an identity. He gave us a system, although according to the nature of football, things are sometimes good and sometimes bad. But he always had a very clear identity when it came to training and playing.”

Now that identity could be rebuilt in Manchester, with Maresca again at the controls and Fernandez potentially installed as a central piece of his new project.
