Arsenal Miss Out on Malick Fofana as Sunderland Make Deadline Day Move
Arsenal’s search for a new winger has ended in frustration on Deadline Day, with Malick Fofana slipping from their grasp and heading to an unlikely Premier League destination instead.
The Gunners had moved for the Lyon wide man at the start of the week, identifying the 21-year-old as a key option to bolster Mikel Arteta’s attacking depth. Talks were opened with the Ligue 1 club over a permanent move, with Fofana understood to be open to a switch to north London and having held discussions with Arteta.
Then the deal stalled.
Reports from Santi Aouna and David Ornstein state that Arsenal refused to meet Lyon’s valuation, with the French side seeking around €40million for the winger. Arsenal did not go that high – and paid the price.
While negotiations dragged, a Premier League rival pounced.
Sunderland stepped in decisively, striking an agreement with Lyon worth around €30million plus add-ons, a package that could eventually climb towards the figure the French club had been holding out for. From the fringes of the story, the Wearside club suddenly became its headline.
For Arsenal, it is a significant blow. For Sunderland, it is a statement.
Fofana had been on Crystal Palace’s radar earlier in the summer, with the Eagles close to a deal of their own. That move collapsed when the player made it clear he did not want to join Palace, leaving the door open for Arsenal and, ultimately, Sunderland.
Now, instead of boarding a train to London, Fofana will fly to the north east for a medical as he closes in on one of the most surprising moves of the window.
The timing only sharpens the frustration at Arsenal.
Arteta’s squad is already light on the left flank after the summer exits of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, leaving a clear need for reinforcement in wide areas. The club have brought in Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge earlier in the window, but the plan had been to add further competition and cover.
Ethan Nwaneri is also set to leave on loan, with the youngster due for a medical at Borussia Dortmund. Another attacking option, temporarily gone.
Arsenal went into Deadline Day looking for one more winger to balance the squad. They may end it watching Fofana unveiled in red and white – just not the shade they had in mind.
